There are different ways to build a sports car. That is apparent in the latest video from Track Attack Canada, who formerly pitted a Chevrolet Corvette Z51 Stingray against a Lamborghini Huracan 580-2. On the latest episode, the team pits a 718 Cayman GT4 against a Camaro ZL1 1LE. With wildly distinct executions on how to make the ultimate track weapon, which sports car will come out on top?

The Show

Track Attack Canada is a YouTube channel that focuses on how well cars perform on—as the name suggests—a track. Presented by Colin Caissie, it’s the brainchild brought on by the co-creators of the ONE TRACK MIND Series on the Throttle House YouTube channel. The show takes on a format that sees both time on the track and in the studio, where a special guest will share their insight on the cars being reviewed.

Episode 4, released on Oct. 21, brings on two special guests—Dirk Dünschede, the Team Manager of Policaro Motorsports, and Jen Gray, a racing enthusiast who’s the founder and owner of her car dealership. Gray is the first guest co-host to review the cars hands-on with Caissie.

The Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 1LE is a front-engined sports car with a supercharged 6.2-liter V-8. In current form, it punches out 650 hp and 650 lb-ft of torque. Porsche’s 718 Cayman GT4 is mid-engined and uses a naturally-aspirated 4-liter flat-six with an 8,000 RPM redline. It puts out 414 hp and 309 lb-ft of torque. Both are rear-wheel-drive and come equipped with a six-speed manual transmission. In the video, they are both using Michelin Pilot Cup 2 tires for a fairer comparison. It quickly becomes apparent, however, that’s where similarities end.

The Chevrolet has four seats, while the Porsche has two trunks. The Chevy's base price undercuts the Porsche by nearly $30,000 USD. The Porsche is available as a roadster with much of the same GT4 components. You can get a Camaro ZL1 in convertible form, though not with the 1LE package. In all, how do they do against each other in a head-to-head?

Caissie likes the Porsche’s driving dynamics. Gray likes the Chevy’s supercharged grunt. The Auto-Slalom section reveals a notable discrepancy between the two cars. The less-powerful Cayman GT4 pulled out a time of 44.25, while Gray’s best run in the Camaro was 51.24. Though the drivers call it close, seven seconds is a large enough difference on the track. The Camaro then wins the Drag Race.

With a tally of one-all, it comes down to the final track segment of the show, the Hot Lap around Toronto Motorsports Park. Here, the gap closes to just four tenths of a second. The Camaro ZL1 1LE pulls off a time of 1:17.4, just half a second slower than the Corvette C8 with the Z51 package. Meanwhile, the Porsche’s time of 1:17.8 ties the Lamborghini Huracan 580-2, proving that a power disadvantage doesn’t necessarily mean slower.

Caissie notes that at Porsche's far-higher price tag, he prefers the turbocharged, flat-four unit for the sake of a higher power output at lower RPMs. Can the upcoming Cayman GT4 RS change that? In the meantime, much like the fourth-tenth gap in the Hot Lap, the co-hosts agree that the Chevy Camaro ZL1 1LE wins this comparison by a hair.
