When it comes to ultimate track cars and fast hypercars, McLaren perhaps did it the best with their incredible P1. And they went one better when they created the P1 GTR. The P1 GTR is a track focused iteration of the P1, harking back to the days of the McLaren F1 GTR that won Le Mans in 1995. Being track focused means you don’t exactly find these on the road. However, some people do take theirs on the road.

And if you want to get your hands on one, you can do just that for a cool $2 million. This is thanks to the guys and girls at Lanzante. Lanzante is a British tuning company, and they have taken a McLaren P1 GTR and not only made it road legal, but made it one of the most fearsome street monsters there is. It delivers the same mind-bending performance that you can expect from the standard F1 GTR, elevated and with that performance now able to get taken onto the road. This is a truly fearsome car.

A Truly Wild And Stunning McLaren P1

The P1 GTR is a super exclusive machine. Only 58 examples of it were ever built, and this example is from 2016. The car went under the hammer via Collecting Cars, and they state that it was first owned by a dealer before it was then sold to its first private owner, who has kept the car for some six years. Under the hood of this truly remarkable machine is a 3.8-liter V8 engine, as well as an electric motor. Combined, these produce 986 hp which is a giant increase over the original horsepower figure for the 687 hp P1 road car.

Lanzante have carried out a full road-legal conversion for this car in the UK, and the car amazingly still retains plenty of its track-ready features. The GTR is lighter and more powerful than the standard car, but that’s not all. The GTR still has its fixed DRS-capable rear wing, as well as the ERS “push-to-pass” system. This is something you would expect to find on a race car, like the overtake button in Formula 1 or IndyCar’s push-to-pass boost system. The bodywork package across this P1 GTR is incredibly dramatic, and Polycarbonate is also used for its side windows.

A fixed ride height race-prepared suspension is still on the P1 GTR as are its 19-inch center-lock motorsport alloy wheels. In terms of the weight, this P1 GTR is 50kg lighter than the road car and that allows it to deliver a remarkable power-to-weight ratio. Even the wing mirrors on this car are in fact modified from standard. They are now repositioned for better driver clarity and visibility, as well as to keep drag down and make the P1 GTR more slippery in a straightline. This is the attention to detail McLaren are famous for.

When it comes to the bodywork, the GTR features some incredible details. We can see the carbon-fibre front-splitter and the canards, as well as the deep side skirts and its heavily sculpted rear diffuser. These are all race car features from the original P1 GTR retained during its conversion process. Above all that is a large carbon-fiber rear wing featuring its ‘swan neck’ fixed stanchions. All of the aero still functions as McLaren intended when it left the factory, Lanzante ensuring as much of the character of the P1 GTR is also retained for their conversion.

Collecting Cars say that the paintwork of the P1 GTR is in very good overall condition with no major blemishes. The P1 GTR features ‘McLaren P1 GTR’ livery details across it as well as some race-style sponsor stickers. Part of the reason as to why the car still looks so good is down to the PPF that covers some of the most vulnerable areas of the paintwork. There are some small chips and marks, such as with the arches behind the rear wheels. But overall, this car is in stunning condition. The interior still looks immaculate with only signs of minor usage, and Lanzante have previous when it comes to epic P1 GTR Conversions.

A Car That Did Not Sell First Time Around

Quite remarkably, as the listing from Collecting Cars shows, this McLaren P1 GTR did not sell. Perhaps that is simply down to the rather large $2 million asking price. We are living in a much more expensive world of course. This is despite 24 bids placed on the car, which is now located in Stockholm in Sweden at the time of writing. The car does come with a very complete service history though, as well as a car cover, battery charger, service book as well as more paperwork documentation. It is a surprise that something so desirable didn’t sell.
