HO HO HO! It's that time of the year again, HOTCARS fans! Perhaps you've already braved the elements, throng of holiday shoppers, and bumper to bumper traffic to search for the perfect Christmas tree. Maybe you haven't. Well, there's still time but if you are going to head out and get that once in a lifetime holiday tree for your family celebration there are a few things you should be aware of so you do it safely for you and your cherished ride. Check it out below.

Preparation

Like any task preparation is the key to success. First, take measurements inside your home where the tree is to be displayed and write them down or store them on your digital device. There are apps available to make the job easier. Next, make sure you dress appropriately and not just for warmth but given the trees are sticky and tough to handle I'd wear an old set of work clothes and put a set of canvas work gloves in the trunk. Next, if it's going on the roof bring some rope, tie downs, or straps and a blanket or sheet to protect the roof of your car.

Loading And Securing The Tree

Before making your purchase make sure the tree is the correct width and height and if not plan on getting out the saw and doing some surgery before you bring it into your house. Most tree lots bag up the tree so the branches are flush. Make sure it is. Have an extra pair of hands ready to help you stow the tree atop your vehicle and place it on the blanket you brought with you. Tie it down securely and make sure no branches hang in your field of view.

Transporting The Tree

I wouldn't travel an excessive speed when transporting the tree as it could fly off. Keep the speed low and check your mirrors more so than usual. Deputize your passenger as well for an extra pair of eyes. Stop midway on your journey home if the drive is a long one, and recheck all your bindings. And when you finally get home be careful when taking it off the roof of your car. Once you get it in the house and set it up, pour a glass of nog, and hang those decorations. Now that wasn't so bad, was it?! Buckle up.
