A big-rig truck hauling luxury cars has crashed under a bridge in Delaware.
You know the scene in that movie where the truck driver is a little tired and he comes across a low bridge? And he takes a moment to consider whether or not he can fit and then decides to go through anyway? And the hero on top of the trailer has to duck down in order to avoid getting smashed into the side of the bridge while the villain (or more often, the villain’s henchmen) gets knocked off with a Wilhelm scream?
It was kinda like that. Only without the heroes, or villains, and a bunch of smashed exotic cars in the back.
According to police reports unearthed by Delaware Online, a transport truck hauling a privately owned collection of luxury vehicles smashed into the overpass at Lower Beech Street in Wilmington, Delaware. The exact contents of the trucks were not disclosed, but it was reportedly carrying Porsches, Maseratis, and Bentleys from Florida to Delaware.
The driver almost made it too but screwed up on those dang low-hanging Delaware bridges.
Police documents indicate the driver misjudged the height of the truck (or the lack of height of the overpass) and then became stuck beneath. Alcohol or drugs were not cited, but it seems likely that fatigue played a role in the driver’s lapse in judgment.
It took road crews nine hours to remove the truck from beneath the bridge, and many of the cars inside the previously “controlled transport environment” were “severely damaged”. The towing company actually had to disassemble part of the truck just to get it unstuck.
The driver was apparently cited for “inattentive driving.” What fate befell the cars is uncertain, but if it comes out of the driver’s paycheck he will be in debt for a very long time.
