What do you get when you cross a 2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 with a 2022 Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing? And that too, in a U-Drag race?

Since we also don’t know the answer to that, we’ll let YouTube channel Edmunds Cars and Ryan ZumMallen find out for us. But first, what exactly, is a U-Drag race?

Let’s Talk Car And Race Specs

Ryan ZumMallen starts the video by introducing the two beauties, and then, asks himself what a U-Drag race is.

His answer: “It's a race to there and back. That's right, we're sending these two cars down this airfield, and at the end, they have to brake hard, flip around, and come back to the finish line. That means you get a standing quarter-mile, hard braking, handling, and a rolling start all in one.”

Is it scientific, he poses, and then answers, Yes-ish.

The cool thing is that after the first race (yes, there will be two races), the drivers will swap cars, and go again, to see which car is the fastest in the straight line, and which can take on the curve better.

The 2022 Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing boasts 668 horsepower and 659 lb-ft of torque, while the 2020 Mustang Shelby GT500 has 760 horsepower and 625 lb-ft of torque. So, which will be the winner? Let’s find out.

The Blackwing carries a massive 6.2-liter supercharged V8, and initially, with Kurt driving it, it peels off the start line, leaving the ‘Stang behind. But the 5.2-liter supercharged V8 of the Shelby GT500 soon catches up and surpasses the Caddy, with Reese driving it. The ‘Stang pulls through the quarter-mile first and takes on the curve like a champ, leaving the Caddy way, way behind.

In the next run, both lanes and drivers swap and Reese manages a better start with the Blackwing, although the Shelby-tuned Mustang still pulled first at the quarter-mile. They seemed to reach the end at almost the same time, and turn at the same time too, but the Mustang soared ahead in the straight line.

The result? The Caddy made the U-drag in 31.4 seconds, while the Shelby GT500 did the same in 31.2 seconds. The takeaway, as Kurt says, is that the Shelby is crazy fast, but both cars have enough power. The kind you should be careful with because both of them are “pretty wild rides.” That said, the 2020 Shelby Mustang GT500 still managed to beat the newer 2022 Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing, both times.
