Europe, home to many of the greatest carmakers responsible for producing beautiful cars, sports cars to luxury sedans, and everything in between.

By a similar token, every carmaker has also rolled out a few donkeys in terms of styling, frequently through mid-life updates that simply shouldn't have left the initial sketch phase. Others pure personal indulgences, creating the one-person dream car with complete disregard to how much it will cost and more importantly; how few cars it will actually sell.

In worst-case scenarios, ugly car design can ruin carmakers, as the saying goes, from Hero to Zero takes very little time.

10 Fiat Multipla - Car Of The Year 2000, Ugliest Car Ever 2000.

Wikimedia

Winning "Top Gear Car of The Year Award" in 2000 is high praise, but Fiat's Multipla also received the less desirable "Ugliest Car" award from the same team shortly afterward. Boxy designs are nothing new to minivans looking to maximize internal space which often leads to boring exteriors. Fiat, however, managed to go one better with a peculiar duck-billed nose sporting a three-tier lighting arrangement becoming one of the most disliked cars ever produced.

Honest John

Daring to be different masked Fiat's creativity with the original Multipla, one of the best minivans in its class, comfortable and even pleasant to drive, unfortunately, most gearheads will always remember its ugly styling over its abilities.

9 Ford Scorpio - Unknown Designer To This Day.

Ford Scorpio
Parkers

The Scorpio started life as a trim model for Ford Europe's successful Granada range before second-generation cars arrived in 1994 as a separate range altogether. Once respectable looking sedans, Scorpio gained an ugly wide-mouthed appearance made worse by adopting bug-eyed headlamps, credibility and desirability took a steep dive.

Wikimedia

Retaining its connection with Cosworth at least provided some respite from negative criticism, range-topping models featured Ford's 2.9-litre Cologne unit delivering up decent performance levels. Ford never officially released the name of the Scorpio's designer, perhaps realizing their mistake, sales figures also remain a closely guarded secret.

8 Veritas RS III - Angriest Car Face Ever.

Autoblog

Once every few years, someone comes along promising a new sports car, Veritas unveiling their RS III model in 2009, complete with possibly the angriest front design of any car ever produced. Offered at a list price of $487,000 with production restricted to 30 units, all powered by BMW V12 engines claiming to produce 500hp, on paper at least good for 215mph.

Veritas RS III - Rear View

Exactly how many models were built is unclear, with 8 of the original production run reserved for customers, rumors seem to come and go every few years, If and when deliveries take place, hopefully, Veritas will tone down the styling giving RS III a more friendly less ugly nose.

7 Daimler Dart SP250 - Not One Of Daimlers Finest Creations.

Coys Of Kensington

Once proud suppliers of limos to Britain's Royal Family, Daimler also has a history of producing small sports cars, although they lack the class of their later models. Originally referred to as Dart before production, SP250 arrived in 1959 competing against Jaguars prettier and faster XK150, who would later take control of Daimler the following year.

Coys Of Kensington

Stripping away the ugly bug-eyed body and Daimler's SP250 isn't a bad little sports car, equipped with a small block 2.5-liter Hemi V8 delivery 140hp good for around 120mph. Strong competition and poor design resulting in 2654 examples being built, a long way short of 3,000 units hoped for by Daimler.

6 Lancia Thesis - Ugliest Lancia Ever Produced.

Petrol Blog

Mentioning the name Lancia conjures images of famous sports cars are rallying success, except the company hasn't always got the recipe quite right. Easily the lowest point in Lancia's history, 2001 marked the launch of the company's new executive Thesis sedan, quite possibly the ugliest car to ever wear the name Lancia.

Wikipedia

Viewed from behind things aren't too bad resembling more prestigious German brands, however, the front is a mishmash of old meets new and can only be described as ugly, bizarrely Lancia stuck with Thesis and even produced a stretched limo version.

5 Amphicar 770 - Boats And Cars Should Never Mix

Silodrome

One has to question why anyone would want either a compromised car or boat, Amphicar doesn't fill either role particularly well, and to make matters worse is undeniably ugly. Resembling a boat hull with cut out holes to accommodate road wheels means on-water performance is going to be slow, managing just 7 knots. Reversing the scenario, on-road performance although better at 70mph is massively compromised with high-riding suspensions resulting in excessive body roll.

Silodrome

Produced between 1961-65, just 3878 examples were built making the Amphicar quite a rare sight which is probably just as well, time hasn't been kind to the original design, it remains a quirky ugly boat-car hybrid.

4 Ford Ka - Uninspiring Sub Compact.

Parkers

Taking the already successful Fiesta and producing a chopped down cheaper version wearing a new "cutesy" body resulted in Ford's 1996 Ka - underpowered, slow, and ugly. Early production models in an attempt to keep maintenance costs to a minimum wore a large single-piece front and rear bumpers in plain matte black plastic leading many critics to claim Ka appeared to be wearing a diaper - later models would be color-coded.

Parkers

Unlike their bigger Fiesta brothers, Kas made do with outdated Endura-E engines, a design closely related to Ford's 1950s Kent series limiting performance to "relaxed" driving requiring 14 seconds to reach 60mph.

3 IFR Automotive Aspid - Dated, Ugly, And Expensive.

Car Info

Starting at $100,000 makes Aspid quite pricey for what is just another open-wheeled sports car design, added to which, it's not exactly a good-looking car. Press release materials make for good reading, carbon-fiber construction, DLR wishbones, and modular wiring all aimed at keeping weight down to 1600lbs. Performance figures also sound impressive boasting 400hp from Honda's supercharged 2-liter F20C engine, resulting in a maximum of 155mph.

WallPaperUp

Open wheeled cars have their place in history, times have moved on, modern sports cars offer more for less while looking a lot prettier also.

2 Lamborghini LM002 - Unwanted Military Design

It is common knowledge Lamborghini started building tractors before moving on to build performance cars, few people will realize the company also toyed with military vehicles resulting in the unloved LM002. Failing to find military customers would lead Lamborghini to produce their LM002 for civilian use, although immense in every way - not least thirst - fewer than 300 models were built.

Hemmings

Designed primarily for military use, it is easy to see how the LM002 seemingly skipped the styling department, every panel being a case of function over form, yes it's a Lamborghini, and yes it is very ugly.

1 Tatra T87 - Ugly Fins And Lights

Antebellum

Admittedly some slack should be given considering T87 first appeared in 1936, car manufacturing was still new, even so, the same decade gave us the beautiful Supermarine Spitfire. Quite why Tatra decided three headlamps would be better than two, offsetting any symmetry the T87 had is a mystery, the central hood-mounted lamp would never be in line with the others.

Antebellum

At the rear similar quirky design choices don't make much sense, designed to be a limousine it seems a peculiar choice to do away with the rear window, in its place a central shark-fin serving no apparent purpose.
