Anything ugly will tend to attract a lot of hate, even if it's actually very good. If it doesn't please the eye then it is deemed as no good by most people. This applies to most things, including cars.
Over the years there have been some horrendous looking cars that are actually very good. They're innovative, comfortable and one-hundred percent caused a stir in the car scene. It is questionable what the designers of these cars were thinking at the time as it was completely different from the engineers. Here are 8 ugly cars that are actually very good despite their unattractive appearance.
7 Porsche Panamera
Launched in 2009, it was Porsche's first proper production sedan. It was sporty, fast, and had a great interior. But critics pointed out the looks – it looked like an elongated 911 and the rear of the car just did not look right. The front was too long and the rear too short, so the Panamera was completely disproportionate.
It's a sporty car with engine examples such as the 4.8-liter twin-turbo Turbo S model producing 562hp and 590 lb-ft of torque. It also sold quite well over the 7 years, especially in American markets. It is, however, an extremely controversial sedan with 2014 Porsche CEO Matthias Mueller stating at the time, "the design could be better" according to Australian magazine motoring.
6 Jaguar XJ220
The Jaguar XJ220 is by far one of the best British driver's cars ever made, and unfortunately, one of the 1990's ugliest supercars as well. However, it's not much of a looker. It's just too long, and the popup headlights don't really pop out as such either. The XJ220 doesn't look aggressive enough despite it actually being an insanely hard car to drive. It's a nice car that is just too long and doesn't look exotic enough whatsoever. For the high price point, Jaguar could have done better.
Under the hood is a twin-turbo V6 pushing out 542hp and 475 lb-ft of torque. This thing was seriously quick then. The 0 to 60mph took place in 3.7 seconds with a top speed of 213mph. A serious car that only an expert could tame. However, for such a big cat, Jaguar could have made it look a bit more aggressive.
5 BMW M3 G80/ M4 G82 Competition
Here are two brilliant cars with quite a controversial design. Both cars look fine from the side and rear but it's the front that really has had people scratching their heads. They look like pig nostrils. The grille is ridiculously huge and nobody expected it to be on these cars. People thought BMW was joking when these original designs came out, but clearly they weren't.
Under the hood is the new B58 producing 503hp and 479lb-ft of torque. The new cars push to 60 in 3.9 seconds flat out hitting 180mph. Great figures and even better with S-drive and an RWD manual option, plus a touring body too. Such a shame the face looks so weird though, you honestly can't take it seriously.
4 Fiat Multipla
Here is a really hideous car. How could something so ugly come out of Italy? Well, it did actually win Top Gear's Car of the Year award in 1999, so something must've been good?! The design is smart, first of all. It's smaller than all of its rivals yet it's bigger inside with one extra seat. With the engine out in front, it is also a lot safer, too.
The Multipla is perfect for families – not that any family would want a car looking like that, though. Older people enjoyed it with lots of headroom and the upright driving position. It is a complete oddball but similar to the likes of McLaren with their Senna, Fiat has put practicality and engineering over looks.
3 Citroën 2CV
You might be thinking, "what on earth is this?" Meet the Citroën 2CV, a car produced from 1948 till 1990 which is 42 years. It was a low-cost easy to maintain car from France deigned a "people's car." Think of it as the French VW Beetle. This thing was hideous and looked like a snail.
The performance was so appalling, it's barely worth mentioning.0 to 60 never happened as the top speed was only 42 mph. The 2CV really was revolutionary to France and Africa as it was so cheap and sturdy. Nothing could break through this mighty little car. Nowadays just looking at it, though, it is hard not to laugh.
2 BMW X6 G06
A good-looking car? Probably the worst looking SUV ever created. It is fast though, and the interior is sublime. The X6 G06 is by far the ugliest BMW currently on sale because it just looks so awkward. The rear has a completely different design agenda than the front, and it looks as if BMW is forcing their coupe design into something that's just too big.
Granted, it's powerful with the X6 M pushing 617hp and 553 lb-ft of torque, but speed does not compensate for that hideous nose. The X6 just looks too big nowadays that BMW is trying too hard with the design, making it one of BMW's most controversial cars.
The Infiniti QX80 is a seriously weird SUV. What was Nissan thinking when designing this SUV? There is just too much going on design-wise with the QX80. It's as if there is a design feature in every corner of the body. The headlights are too small, the grille is too big, the rear window is too big, and so on.
However, the QX80 is actually a good luxury SUV. Powered by a 400hp 5.6liter V8, it is quite a beastly car. Compared to the QX56, the QX80 has gotten a lot sharper and sportier as well as more luxurious in general.
1 Mini Coupe
Here is a really pointless car. Mini did not need to make this but they did. The Mini Coupe is not a stylish coupe at all and it looks as if they took a hatch, sliced off the roof, rear seats, and rear windows, and put on some weird canopy roof that's completely disproportionate.
It is a shame considering it handles better than the standard Mini. It is more aerodynamic and also all the same engines are featured on the coupe as they are on the hatch. But its looks are unacceptable and Mini really should have known better considering the standard hatch is extremely stylish.
