Every year, the world's wealthiest automobile collectors head to Amelia Island to enjoy some of the world's best cars. Amid all the tents, displays, and lineups are plenty of auctions, as well, where high-end collectors know they can find the best prices for their rare specimens. But every now and then, a serious deal sneaks through Amelia Island, as is illustrated this year by an ultra-rare 2016 McLaren MSO HS that was auctioned by Gooding & Company.

Better Than Yours

The McLaren MSO HS is based upon the already-stellar 675LT, with a wide range of expensive options that seriously upgrade the car. A total build number of only 25 examples ever put together my McLaren Special Operations also helps to add to the car in question's provenance, as does an odometer reading of just over 1,800 miles.

Looks Good, Drives Better

Compared to the base 675LT, which already started around $345,000 and represented the higher-performance version of the 650S, the MSO HS produces 679 horsepower from its twin-turbocharged, 3.8-liter V8—an increase of 13 more than its little sibling. That power rumbles through a crossflow muffler, hand-polished exhaust ports, and twin titanium exhaust outlets. The engine is, of course, shrouded in plenty of carbon fiber, as is much of the rest of the car, contributing to an 88-pound reduction in weight.

Inside And Out

This car is number 20 of the 25 MSO HS examples built and was sold with a clean Carfax report, features a ton of aerodynamic goodies to increase downforce by 220 pounds over the base 675LT, and also purposefully resembles the legendary F1 GTR on the exterior. Throw in chrome paint and a 95-count McLaren factory inspection completed before the sale, and it's a serious mystery how this car sold for only $390,000 at Amelia Island without another bidder upping the ante.
