Why do we modify cars? In most cases, modifications are done to make the car more unique, personalized, or simply more attention-grabbing wherever we go. And if done right, a modified car will always be cooler than a stock one.

However, people can sometimes take car modifications too far, to the point where the end product looks nothing like the vehicle it started out as. So, to that end, we have compiled a list of 10 cars that all are in some way, shape, or form totally unrecognizable from when they rolled off the production line. The question is, can you guess which models hide underneath all the mods?

11 Jalapeno Fiero

via reddit

While it's almost impossible to tell which model hides under all of these modifications, it sure as hell didn't look like THAT when it left the factory. The car in question is actually a heavily-modified Pontiac Fiero that's been given the "Jalapeno" body kit. The owner of this Fiero may or may not have wanted it to be a Jeep, but it's actually a pretty respectable custom off-road machine now!

10 Modified Muscle Car

via Otomotif Custom

Muscle cars are surely the most modified type of car in existence. Perhaps second only to hotrods. They bring an array of customization, on another level and this, what looks like was a Pontiac GTO has been tuned to the highest level, with half of the engine sticking out of the hood!

9 Cruella De Ville Machine

via Motorious

This car started out life as a Mercury Cougar. Yes, really! This is now a Tiffany Classic Coupe, a modern vehicle that has been created with the parts and body of an older machine to look like Cruella De Ville's car from 101 Dalmations. It has the same engine as the Cougar - the 5.0 liter Ford V8 - but aside from that, it's difficult to tell what this car used to be.

8 General Lee

This hot rod has been given a General Lee makeover. And whatever it used to be, it is totally unrecognizable now, sporting a rustic paint job with American stars emblazoned all over it, plus the crazy orange wheels.

7 Custom 1960 Cadillac

Cadillacs looked great in the 1960s, didn’t they? Surely, some of the best-looking cars ever made. Especially the classics. And whilst this one is not totally unrecognizable from what it was, it's still not what it was when it left the factory back in 1960.

6 Crazy Hot Rods

via Which Car

This car came courtesy of Polar Air, and we think the text written on the front it is apt. It is the Madd Maxx! This started out as a 1937 Ford Truck, which then has morphed into this insane machine with a 526-cube Hemi engine in it that tops out at 300 hp. That’s quite a lot!

5 SEMA Camaro

via Auto Guide

The SEMA car show often has some pretty cool machines on show, and muscle cars are a big part of that. And it's an excellent place to find great restomods of classic American cars. This heavily-modified Camaro is definitely one of them, sporting a custom body kit with a roll cage and a set of gold wheels.

4 Unrecognizable Stingray

via Wallpaper Up

Depending on how much you love classic American sports cars, you probably had a hard time trying to work out what on Earth this car used to be. Of course, the answer is the 1978 Corvette Stingray. Not only has this classic 'Vette been modified beyond any logic and reason, it's been downright ruined. The flames are probably the least offensive part of this modification. Given how desirable and gorgeous classic Stingrays are, I'm not sure why anyone would do this.

3 Not-A-Ford-GT

2

I know your first instinct is telling you that this has to be a Ford GT. But did you notice that there's something "off" about this GT? If you have, then you have a good eye, because this is actually a Pontiac Fiero in disguise. It's actually impressive how well this car turned out and it will undoubtedly trick many people into thinking it's a Ford GT.

1 Mad Mustang

via Pinterest

This is certainly a crazy body kit to have on a Mustang. And in fairness, there isn’t anything too conventional about a Mustang’s styling anyway. But to see this coming towards you, you’d certainly have to think twice when trying to recognize what car it is. Honestly, I’m not sure why you’d do this to a Mustang.
