There are scores of high-performing electric SUVs about to hit the market from many of the world's major carmakers, as well as many of the startup entrants in the market. Many of these SUVs have very impressive ranges and would have been a pipe dream just a few years ago. The ranges and speed on some of these SUVs are so impressive and their charge times are so quick that they can easily compete with gasoline SUVs.
Many of these SUVs are being built from an automaker's already existing platform for a pickup truck or other vehicle. Furthermore, the SUVs about to hit the roads are coming from all corners of the auto-industry world. It's only a matter of time before the world switches over to EVs, and it would seem when that day happens, we will have plenty of choices. Here are the upcoming electric SUVs we are looking forward to the most.
10 Rivian R1S - $70,000
The Rivian R1S is built on the same platform as the Rivian R1T pickup. The Rivian R1S promises to be a very well-performing SUV and will be coming with a range of over 300 miles on a single charge.
It will be able to accelerate from 0-60 mph in just 3.0 seconds and wade through 3 feet of water. It has an impressive 14 inches of ground clearance and a towing capacity of up to 7,700 lbs.
9 Lucid Motors "Project Gravity" - $???
Lucid Motors is just about to launch its first vehicle. But they are already hard at work on their first SUV that is slated to be ready in 2023. Dubbed "Project Gravity" it also promises to be a very high-performing SUV.
Given that the Lucid Air has already redefined what the maximum range for an EV is and that it can accelerate to 60 mph in just 2.0 seconds, we have high hopes for Lucid's SUV.
8 Hummer EV SUV - $105,595
General Motors is breathing new life into its deceased Hummer brand and resurrecting it anew as an all-electric series. The Hummer EV will be coming in both a pickup and SUV variant.
The SUV will have a range of over 300 miles and will be at the cutting edge of technology for the American giant. It is being designed with a particular emphasis on off-roading. It will be able to get up to 60 mph in just 3.5 seconds.
7 Toyota bZ4X Concept
Toyota has just released its new EV SUV concept, and it already has us all excited. At the moment, we don't know much of the specs for this new SUV, but we do know that Toyota is betting heavily on it.
15 years ago, Toyota was leading the world with pioneering the all-new Toyota Prius hybrid, but since then it has been eclipsed. Toyota with its bZ4X Concept is seeking to aggressively once more become the world leader.
6 BMW iX xDrive 50 - $120,000
BMW's iX xDrive 50 is soon to hit the streets — maybe later on this year. The iX xDrive 50 offers the best EV technology that BMW has to offer, and it is one of the very best SUVs coming from Europe.
This expensive vehicle will be coming with a top speed of 124 mph and a range of some 315 miles on a single charge. It can also get to 62 mph in 4.8 seconds.
5 Nissan Ariya 87kWh - $61,000
The Nissan Ariya is exciting because it's awesome to finally see another EV coming out of this Japanese car company other than the Nissan Leaf. Nissan seemed to be an early pioneer in EV technology.
Its Ariya will be an SUV worth getting with its respectable range of 275 miles. Compared to the others listed above, it may appear a little sluggish, with a top speed of 99 mph and an acceleration to 62 mph of 7.6 seconds.
4 Skoda Enyaq iV 80 - $51,000
The Enyaq iV 80 is the Czech car company Skoda's first electric SUV. This will be a more modest and affordable SUV and will come with a range of 260 miles and a top speed of 99 mph.
Its acceleration is also slower, requiring 8.6 seconds to reach 62 mph. Its cheaper variant starts at around $44,000 and so is in the price range of more people. Skoda is quite a popular brand over the Atlantic in Europe.
3 Audi Q4 e-tron 40 - $113,000
Audi is also entering the EV SUV market with its Audi Q4 e-tron 40. This vehicle seems to be very expensive for the specs it offers, so unless you're a big Audi fan, you might find a better deal with the Rivian R1S.
The Audi Q4 e-tron 40 will come with a range of 260 miles on a charge and an acceleration of 62 mph in 4.1 seconds. It maxes out at 152 mph — at least it's fast.
2 Byton M-Byte 95 kWh 2WD - $88,000
The exciting thing about the Byton M-Byte is that it just might be the first Chinese car you should actually consider buying. Finally, we are beginning to see cars actually of reasonable quality coming out of China.
The Byton M-Byte is being made by the startup Chinese and German electric car company Byton. It will have a range of 250 miles, an acceleration to 62 mph of 7.5 seconds, and a top speed of 118 mph.
1 Kia EV6 Long Range 2WD - $68,000
The Kia EV6 is a crossover SUV and is another option from Korea. It will zip along at a top speed of some 115 mph and have a range of 260 miles.
The Kia EV6 is built on its parent company's (Hyundai) E-GMP platform and is similar to the Ioniq 5. So next year you will have the choice of an electric SUV from all the major car-making countries, including the Czech Republic and South Korea.
In summary, in two short years, we will all be spoiled for choice!
