10 2023 Mazda 3
With an excellent reliability rating accompanying its name, the Mazda3 returns for 2023 as a significantly improved model, strengthening its burgeoning reputation with an impressive array of standard and available features. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are now standard infotainment equipment. As well, the base 2.0-liter engine has been dropped in favor of the previously available 2.5-liter four-cylinder, which will now give you a 5-hp increase in output (191 horsepower) over last year (186 hp).
In addition to the horsepower bump, the efficiency of the 2.5-liter engine is enhanced with the use of cylinder-deactivation technology that optimizes performance when you're cruising along in specific operating conditions to improve fuel economy. As a result, Mazda3 models with the new standard engine return 28 mpg in the city and 37 mpg on the highway. This engine runs as a front-wheel drive, although the midrange Carbon Edition is now available with all-wheel drive. The top two Mazda3 models — the 2.5 Turbo and the 2.5 Turbo Premium Plus — feature a 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 227 or 250 horsepower, depending on the type of gasoline used.
9 2023 Mazda CX-60
Luxury is slowly becoming a word in modern classifications for Mazda, as the Japanese automaker makes conscious efforts to shift its manufacturing gears into premium territories. So far, few vehicles embody its commitment to meeting the diversifying needs and lifestyles of luxury customers quite like the CX-60.
Armed with an upscale cabin and smooth suspension, the CX-60 oozes class and feels a significant step-up for Mazda in terms of opulence. Under the hood, there's a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine that, alongside a 100kW electric motor and 17.8 kWh battery pack, provides 323 horsepower total and 369 lb-ft of torque. This plug-in hybrid engine sends power to all four wheels via a slick-shifting eight-speed automatic transmission. Mazda says the CX-60 will also offer a 3.0-liter straight-six petrol engine and a 3.3-liter diesel option.
8 2023 Toyota bZ4X
You might think it odd that the 2023 bZ4X is on this list due to its lack of pace. But Toyota's first fully electric car has enough in its arsenal to compete in the marketplace on its own merits. Firstly, what it lacks in handling and acceleration, the bZ4X makes up for with outstanding ride quality, guaranteeing a comfortably smooth and quiet driving experience.
The bZ4X has also earned much praise for its modern interior design and passenger-friendly layout. Occupants will find plenty of space to stretch out, plus all those advanced technologies that contribute to the driving experience. They include a 12.3-inch touchscreen with straightforward controls, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration, wireless device charging, and five USB ports. The bZ4X also features a host of standard safety amenities, including dynamic radar cruise control, pre-collision warning with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning with steering assist, lane-tracing assist, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, automatic high-beam headlights, and more.
7 2023 Honda CR-V
The Honda CR-V marks a stylish start to its sixth generation with a complete redesign for 2023. The all-new model is about 2.8 inches longer, 0.4 inches wider, and 0.6 inches taller than the previous CR-V. This allowed Honda engineers to package a roomier interior and cram a wealth of features for a more relaxing onboard experience. Honda says users will also notice the extra potency of the new entry-level 1.5-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder over that of the previous generation, as it is now more efficient and delivers a smoother response. Even so, the engine makes the same output as last year's (190 hp) and continues to be mated to the same continuously variable automatic transmissions (CVTs) from the previous model, albeit a slightly enhanced version. CR-V Sport and Sport Touring models come standard with a hybrid powertrain combining a 2.0-liter four-cylinder with two electric motors. The configuration makes 204 hp and 247 lb-ft of torque.
Other standard features in the latest CR-V include heated front seats, a power moonroof, dual-zone automatic climate control, a new 7-inch infotainment system, smartphone integration via Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and as Honda Sensing safety suite, which bundles numerous driver assistance systems.
6 2023 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid Woodland Edition
Those wanting a RAV4 Hybrid version dedicated to rough, off-road driving have much to cheer about the RAV4 Woodland Edition, which will allow them unforgettable driving on and off-road. Technology and off-road-oriented upgrades are the focus of this all-new model, which brings Falken Wildpeak all-terrain tires, a TRD suspension, and a newly optional 10.5-inch touchscreen. Outside, the RAV4 Hybrid Woodland Edition distinguishes itself from the regular model with bronze-colored wheels, exhaust tips, mud flaps, black badges, and a chunkier roof rack.
Along with the revised suspension and all-terrain tires, the exterior tweaks help make the RAV4 Hybrid Woodland Edition ready for your next adventure, even if your off-road needs are a bit more hardcore. Under the hood, there's a 2.5-liter inline-four that combines with two electric motors to generate a total of 219 horsepower. All-wheel drive is standard.
5 2023 Acura Integra
The Integra is back and brings with it a premium-feeling interior and some unmistakable styling cues worthy of its legendary nameplate. As you would expect, the new Integra shares its bones with the Honda Civic Si and carries forward with the same 200-hp turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine in the Honda Civic Si.
Every 2023 Integra model comes standard with front-wheel drive and a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). However, A-Spec models with Technology package can be equipped with an optional manual transmission and a limited-slip differential. Inside, the 5-door liftback gets heated sport seats, synthetic leather upholstery, and an eight-way power driver seat as standard. If you desire more indulgence, you can opt for an A-Spec model with the optional Technology package. It adds niceties like leatherette seats with microsuede inserts, a 12-way power adjustable driver seat, a four-way power-adjustable front passenger seat, and similar upgrades.
4 2023 Toyota Crown
For years, North American gearheads have hoped that Toyota would bring back the Toyota Crown nameplate to our shores. Fortunately, this yearning will soon be satisfied, as the Japanese automaker will finally bring over a Crown for Canadian and US consumers in 2023. The all-new Toyota Crown is a high-riding, boldly-styled, and feature-laden sedan that's good to drive and really posh inside.
It comes standard with a hybrid powertrain consisting of a 2.5-liter inline-4 and dual electric motors (with an estimated 236 combined horsepower) as well as an available 2.4-liter turbocharged inline-4 paired with dual electric motors (340 combined horsepower). A six-speed automatic transmission and adaptive suspension also come standard. Inside, the Crown remains very quiet thanks to effective sound-deadening materials and the compliant suspension. Toyota's new full-size sedan is also equipped with a 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen, a 12.3-inch digital driver's display, and heated front seats.
3 2023 Toyota GR Corolla
Toyota's pure-bred performance hot hatch will arrive at North American shores on the brand's TNGA: GA-C platform, which also underpins the regular Corolla, Corolla Cross, Toyota CH-R, and various other models.
Along with the comfort and quality you'd expect from Toyota, the GR Corolla packs a 300-hp 3-1.6-liter, 3-cylinder gasoline turbocharged engine borrowed from the GR Yaris (the engine generates 268 hp in the Yaris). The GR Corolla also proves a punchy 5-door hatchback with its crisp six-speed manual transmission and lively acceleration, making it an all-round impressive sport compact.
2 2023 Honda Civic Type R
A new generation of Honda's coveted hot hatch is landing in showrooms in 2023, and we love to see the excitement it brings to owners and enthusiasts. The new Civic Type R will continue to feature a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder. However, Honda re-engineered the engine internally and equipped a redesigned turbocharger along with a more efficient exhaust system, resulting in a power output increase of 9 hp (315 vs. 306 hp before).
Inside, the Type R's new design is conceived with a view to minimal styling based on fundamental sporty cues. What remains the same is the cosseting seats up front, which are sizeable, incredibly supportive, and wrap you up in red suede-like upholstery. If you've driven the latest regular Civics, you'll also be familiar with the 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system, which comes standard alongside a 10.2-inch digital gauge cluster, as well as wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
1 2023 Nissan Z
Nissan's 2-door fastback coupe has entered a new generation, replacing the 370Z. The 2023 Nissan Z will be available in three grades: Sport, Performance, and the limited-edition Proto Spec. All models have an appealing mix of retro styling and utterly modern cues. For instance, the long bonnet and short rear end are a nod to the Datsun 240Z sold in the United States.
Under the hood of the new Nissan Z is a 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged V6 making a healthy 400 hp and 350 lb-ft of torque. As standard, the sports car gets a six-speed manual transmission. However, those wanting an automatic can opt for a nine-speed unit at no extra cost.
