American Automaker Cadillac introduced the XT5 in 2017 to replace the previous Cadillac SRX; with XT standing for “crossover touring”, the rebrand perfectly represents what the XT5 is: a highly competitive luxury crossover SUV. Here’s what we love about it:

First let’s talk design. From the outside, the 2017 XT5’s compact build is quite appealing, with smart curves and edges that give it a sporty and clean look; design cues such as the fang-like headlights, twelves-spoke rims, and chrome trims really help with the overall presence of the vehicle as well - the newer 2022 Cadillac XT5 also continues in a similar vein, although it looks more modern in comparison - however the older 2017 car will be much cheaper to buy today.

The interior holds its own as well, staying true to the luxurious quality that’s promised. Design is comfortable and classy, with good materials all over the place even in the base model. Top of the range models, however, offer even higher quality materials in the form of leather, metal and wooden trims.

In terms of tech, the XT5 offers plenty right off the bat on the base model, such as rear parking sensors, an 8-speaker Bose sound system, and an infotainment system with integrated Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. There’s also no shortage of additional options for those willing to spend the extra cash, including a panoramic sunroof, automatic parking system, heated steering wheel and rear seats, and an upgraded 14-speaker Bose sound system that truly sounds amazing, and a fully colored heads-up display.

The 2017 XT5 also offers an abundance of safety features, including lane departure warning and intervention, forward collision braking, and post-collision safety systems.

Without further ado, let's look at what eles we love about the 2017 Cadillac XT5.

Performance Of The 2017 XT5

All models of the 2017 XT5 come with the same engine: a 3.6-liter V6 that puts out 310-hp and 271 lb-ft of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. This makes the XT5 capable of doing 0-60 in 6.5 seconds and a top speed of 130 mph. The drive is smooth and comfortable, and the engine is surprisingly tame in terms of noise which makes for a quiet cabin.

Handling is good in the front-wheel drive base model, but is even better in the optional All-wheel drive variants, especially considering the dual clutch technology offered along with it; there’s also selectable drive modes that adjust the suspension to your needs, options being Touring, Snow/Ice, and Sport. Lastly, the chassis itself has an extremely well-thought frame that provides impressive visibility for the driver, making it easy and even enjoyable to spot and execute driving maneuvers.

The Surprising Practicality Of The XT5

One of Cadillac’s most noteworthy achievements with the 2017 XT5 is just how practical they managed to make it, even though the vehicle itself is not overly large, in fact being quite compact and ‘crossoverly’. Space in the back row is more than enough, and the seats themselves are adjustable both vertically and horizontally; also, all three rear seats are comfortable due to the vehicle’s completely flat floor, which allows plenty of leg space for the middle passenger.

Storage is as good as it gets in the entire segment, as the Cadillac XT5 has over 30% more luggage space than competitors, and rear seats that fold down if more is needed. There’s also a removable floor piece in the rear that can serve as additional storage.

In terms of fuel economy, the 2017 XT5 returns 22 mpg combined, which is acceptable considering the V6 that needs feeding. There are also additional technologies that aid fuel consumption, such as a system that turns the engine off when not in use, and another one that can make the engine run on only four cylinders when use of all six isn’t required.

To summarize, the 2017 Cadillac XT5 ticks all the boxes it set out to, settling itself into the segment with a heap of things going for it. It's got good looks and interior design, comfortable seating paired with a smooth and quiet drive, tons of storage space, and a variety of tech to tie it all together. Even though it’s been a few years since the XT5’s original release in 2017, you should definitely shortlist and consider it if you’re in the market for a luxury crossover.
