The Ford Flex — a full-size crossover with a pinch of a minivan and wagon — was rolled out of production in 2019, much to the disappointment of the unique SUV lovers. Introduced in 2005 at the Detroit Auto Show, this vehicle made quite an entrance to the market. It delighted all customers looking for a one-of-a-kind design and was sold out at a high pace.

When Ford announced the discontinuation of the Ford Flex production, customers were offered other modern models such as the Ford Explorer and the Ford Expedition. Nevertheless, many people still want to get the former for many reasons, starting with the design, cargo space, and performance.

Fortunately, there are plenty of Ford Flex models available on the used car market. One can find all-year variants on sale at affordable prices and park this special Ford SUV in the garage. But is there something, in particular, a driver should know before buying a Ford Flex? Is there a variant that is better than the others? Which trim is suitable for what purposes?

If you're looking for a used Ford Flex for yourself, follow our analysis. We unveil everything you should know before buying the SUV from this Ford lineup, including the best trims and estimated prices.

Why Choose The Ford Flex Today?

We already mentioned one of the main reasons for Ford Flex's popularity is its unique design. Those who want to have a little something different will not want to get the Ford Edge or the Ford Escape. Compared to these, the funky Flex obviously stands out.

The boxy look is matched to many stylish elements, including the contrasting-color roof and black-finished wheels. The Ford Flex also has a spacious cabin and cargo space similar to some roomy minivans. Add to the equation the solid power and performance of this crossover, and you get a high-quality vehicle that is highly affordable today.

Because Ford discontinued the Flex in 2019 yet produced many variants from 2009, people can head to the market and find more than a few of these with super low price tags. Moreover, this mid-size SUV with six or seven-passenger capacity comes in several trims to meet different needs.

Each one of the available trims builds upon the previous one to offer more versatility and better features. Which one should I get then, you may ask? Follow our brief overview of all Ford Flex years to find the one that complements your lifestyle.

Which Ford Flex Is Right For You?

To start with the power, the first Flex from 2009 came with a 3.5-liter V6 engine, producing 262-hp and paired with six-speed automatic transmission. In 2010, Ford added a turbocharged version with 355-hp, which increased in 2013 with a few more ponies. The 2013 Ford Flex saw a standard V6 with 285-hp and the turbocharged one with 365-hp.

When it comes to the trims, all Fords came in three versions: SE, SEL, and Limited. Each was an upgrade in terms of interior features, no matter the year of production. The SE is a base model with standard amenities, the SEL packs a few extras, and the Limited offers high-end features.

From 2013, Ford included a Sync system with a touchscreen, navigation, and USB ports. The 2016 design saw Sync 3, with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration. All models from 2013 included safety assistance features. In terms of exterior design, things were changed slightly but not too much.

Things to Consider When Buying A Used Ford Flex

Now, when looking into the model year and trim to choose, one should mainly consider the power and tech. The standard V6 is ideal for daily commutes where extra ponies are not that needed. The turbocharged version is better for off-road rides, especially when paired with an optional all-wheel drive.

In terms of tech features, models made after 2013 offer more modern amenities. However, keep in mind these used Ford Flex variants are also pricier.

Used Ford Flex models are available at a price range between $4,000 and $45,000. Yes, the discrepancies in price are enormous but understandably so. The least expensive models are those from 2009 as they are the oldest and offer less power and fewer tech features. The most expensive ones are from 2019 as they are still very young and equipped with a wide range of amenities, especially the Limited trim.

Which one you'll choose mostly depends on what you need. If you are on a limited budget and only need the stable power and reliability of the Ford, the models below 2013 will do the job well. However, if you prefer even higher power and improved technology, it's better to go with the more recent releases.

The Ford Flex will perform well no matter which year or trim you choose, that's for sure. Still, we recommend going for the one that best matches your lifestyle. The good thing with the used Ford Flex models is that they don't break the bank in 2021. Of course, you can find lower-priced new Ford crossovers, but do they offer the unusual design, comfort, and space as the Flex? That's something to think about before the purchase.
