In a monument to forced induction, builder Brian Kirchberger of BK Built has strapped a 76mm turbo and a nitrous injector to an otherwise stock 2017 Yamaha GP1800 jet ski which combine to put out an estimated 1200hp. Kirchbeger and his team took the mad watercraft to Tavares, Florida for the Hydro Drags in order to break a speed record Kirchbeger helped set at 117mph with a jet ski.

Stock Block

While most tuner builds can start to add up in custom and aftermarket parts, the base for the hyper-fast jet ski has remained more or less untouched. Kirchberger was building for a client's budget and as a result, left the Mitsubishi sourced 1.8-liter four-cylinder stock. Instead, he removed the supercharger and replaced it with a turbocharger favored by import tuner drag racers.

Pushing Water

The biggest struggle in speed runs for watercraft is the water itself. The craft has to push against the resistance of the surface, meaning that speed hunters need to find a balance between contact with the water for propulsion and lifting out of the water to avoid resistance. Since the ski uses water jet propulsion it also requires water intake as well. The BK Built jet ski hull was unaltered and solved the problem through brute force.

135mph on a Lake

Using several GPS recorders, the ski was sent out on the lake for a record attempt at the speed record for a jet ski. In a short burst, the rider Jose Luis Hernandez reached 135 mph before running out of lake, setting a speed record for personal watercraft.
