Volkswagen has teased an all-new camper van for the true outdoorsman.
Last year, Volkswagen introduced the world to the California XXL Concept campervan. Developed from VW’s highly successful California line of campers, but based on the Crafter bus, the California XXL Concept had all the amenities of home but on four tiny wheels.
Volkswagen must have received quite a bit of positive response since they’ve just announced a production version is coming by releasing a set of teaser images. They look almost exactly like the concept car revealed last year, only drawn in pencil. So it’s probably more helpful to look at the concept campervan on Google.
According to Volkswagen’s press release, the California XXL will have a bathroom, kitchen, and sleeping area. The bathroom will have a shower and toilet, although based on the teaser image we suspect that it’ll be an Asian-style shower where the bathroom is entirely waterproof and the shower head simply comes out of the wall.
The kitchen will have a small gas range, a sink, and a tiny refrigerator. In the back is a sleeping area that presumably fits two based on the concept, but it’s hard to tell if it’s confirmed in the drawing. Regardless, the XXL production model will maintain its panoramic roof so you can watch the stars from the bug-sealed confines of your campervan.
Since the California XXL is based on the Crafter we expect the two to share engines. That means a 2.0-L turbodiesel mated to a dual-clutch automatic transmission and outputting 177 hp and 302 lb-ft of torque.
The California XXL will debut at Caravan Salon in Düsseldorf at the end of August. The California isn’t for sale here in North America, but maybe Volkswagen will see that America loves big things and release the California XXL here.
It would be a hell of a way to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the California, which began production in 1988. VW also recently produced their 100,000th California, making it the best selling campervan in history.
