Range anxiety is one of the main reasons why many consumers still shy away from electric vehicles. This is why EV carmakers are doing their best to increase range. If not, they won't sell.

Since it unveiled its new ID.4 electric SUV, Volkswagen has claimed it could travel as far 250 miles on a single charge. Now, that claim has been confirmed by United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for the 1st Edition and Pro models of the ID.4 SUV.

The ID.4 1st Edition and ID.4 Pro will the first models of VW's big EV oush to arrive the U.S. soil in 2021. They are both powered by a rear-mounted AC permanent-magnet synchronous motor offering 201 hp and 228 lb-ft of instant torque. The motor gets its juice from an 82-kWh battery comprised of 288 pouch cells in 12 modules positioned across the ID.4 floorpan between the front and rear axle.

The electric crossover returns 104 MPGe city, 89 MPGe highway, and 97 MPGe combined, as rated by the EPA. This is equivalent to 250 miles of range on a single charge on EPA cycle. It only takes around 38 minutes to replenish the battery's charge from 5% to 80% using 125 kW charging at a DC fast-charging station.
