The original Volkswagen camper van is an iconic vehicle synonymous with the '60s and '70s and evokes images of freedom, hippies, peace, and love. This image was further glorified and enriched as the VW camper made several appearances on the big screen, most notably in movies such as 'Little Miss Sunshine,' 'Argo,' 'Back to the Future,' and 'Field of Dreams.'

The Volkswagen camper van has a strong lineage; several iterations have been produced during its seventy-year history. The original Type 2 was created in the 1950s by Volkswagen as competition to the Dodge A100 and the Ford Econoline. The ID.Buzz is the latest version of the trendy van and is fully electric, with a release date scheduled for early 2024 in the USA and a California Camper version to be released sometime in 2025. The ID.Buzz Microbus has already hit the European market at the end of 2022.

While the delay of the California Camper version is slightly disappointing for VW advocates, there is a silver lining as Alpin Campers have created their own Camper Conversion using the new ID.Buzz and the results are simply spectacular. This modification by the Alpin team will surely provide Volkswagen executives with food for thought and afford them the opportunity to improve their offering before it hits American highways in 2025.

The interior has been made from all eco-friendly materials and uses an array of bright colors, which make the interior appear bigger than it actually is. Inside the van, there is a large bench that easily converts into a bed that comfortably sleeps two people. A lovely kitchenette is one of the main features of ingenuity which has an electric water heating system and a fridge that is conveniently located under the bench.

The interior created by Alpin Campers, the German outfitter is intended to be home to two to three people, and the first thing that is noticeable in Alpin's offering is that it has a very retro feel which will appeal to fans of the famous camper van.

The ID.Buzz looks like it will be a tremendous success for VW and will build on the lineage that its bus has set as the 'gold standard' in its class. While taking that all into account, Alpin Camper has thrown down the gauntlet to VW as they have created a truly impressive camper conversion by modifying a standard ID.Buzz.

This has upped the ante on VWs California model that is due to be released at some stage in 2025. The good news for VW executives and its design team is that they can utilize what works well in this camper conversion and also make significant upgrades such as lengthening the wheelbase.

An easy upgrade would be to fit the California model with a superior powertrain, especially for the higher-spec models. The interior, which is already huge in this camper conversion, could be utilized more efficiently, and additional luxuries could be added.

VW could also introduce a 21-inch infotainment system into its California Camper version, with more USB ports and greater functionality. Given the strides in autonomous driving, the California could be fitted with level 3 autonomous driving functionality.

As for now, it is worth marveling at this spectacular conversion by Alpin Camper. If one is traveling to Europe in the near future, it is worth considering touring in one of these amazing vehicles. It will also be intriguing to see some of the other conversions of the ID.Buzz microbus will undoubtedly feature on YouTube in the subsequent months.
