Supra fans seem torn about whether Toyota's decision to revive the model with a BMW powerplant at its heart was a good idea. After all, following up the legendary fourth-generation Supra and its eminently tunable 2JZ-GTE inline-six was going to be hard enough; doing it with a car built by BMW subsidiary Magna Steyr in Austria just makes things much more complicated.

And yet, early indications for the 2020 GR Supra point to a turbocharged inline-six that actually produces much more power than advertised—a classic move by Toyota hearkening back to the Japanese "Gentlemen's Agreement" of 1989. And now, one man has proven that the new Supra is pretty tunable as a new dyno test shows his drift build putting down four-figure horsepower numbers.

Listen And Weep

The video features a long intro working up to the good bit, all of which is worth watching to get an inkling as to the kind of work that goes into a 1,000-horsepower dynamometer run. The car is shown in various stages of completion—though not nearly complete, in any sense of the word, given that the front and rear ends are missing bumper covers, hoods, and a trunk. While other tuners have swapped in a 2JZ-GTE to prevent any cries of heresy, Stephen Papadakis wanted to use the car's factory B58 BMW inline-six.

Pretty much everything about the car has been rebuilt, from the gutted chassis and a fitted roll cage to the engine, which has been beefed up with forged pistons, rods, a Mountune intake manifold with air-to-air intercooler and a custom exhaust system that can fit a massive BorgWarner snail.

The last steps before this round of dyno testing included finishing up the wiring system, reinstalling the engine, and doing a warmup before hardcore redlining. In the end, the setup puts out 750 horsepower—at the wheels, mind you—on 25 psi of boost. Not bad for a Beemer!
