Depending on where you live, Ford F-150 pickups are about as common as ants at a summertime picnic. So, the desire to have a unique truck can be a strong incentive to seek special modifications. With this in mind, YouTube channel Exhaust Addicts takes us through its latest project of swapping the stock exhaust on a 2021 Ford F-150 PowerBoost hybrid for a Black Widow Widowmaker exhaust.

Truck Owner Skips The Angry Housewife And Neighborhater Options

Black Widow exhausts are noteworthy (literally) for the audible character its aftermarket products give to cars, trucks, and motorcycles. With names like the Angry Housewife and the Neighborhater, Black Widow systems have a way of attracting attention that may not preserve peace in the community. In the interest of neighborly relations, the owner of this F-150 PowerBoost likely chose the more subdued Widowmaker.

The video opens with a look at a normal F-150 in eye-popping Velocity Blue, but we learn this is the PoweBoost hybrid in Lariat SuperCrew trim. Seeking to shatter the quiet status quo (remember, when in full-electric mode, hybrids are virtually silent), the truck’s stock muffler and resonator are removed. We see a close-up of how the Widowmaker muffler was added along with a 3-inch pipe to make it all work. To finish things up, the shop (Discount Mufflers & Custom Exhausts in Nashville, TN) adds a black dual exhaust tip coming out on the passenger side between the tailgate and rear wheel well.

Not The Roar Of A Shelby GT500

Viewers also get to see and hear the on-again, off-again effect of the Widowmaker that coincides with the use of the accelerator. When the engine is on but running in hybrid mode, there’s zero sound coming from the tailpipe. Step on the gas and a modestly throaty exhaust note is heard. While this isn’t the magnificent roar that comes from cars like a Mustang Shelby GT500 or the hard-to-miss raucous of a tricked-out Honda Civic, the new sound coming from the F-150 is noticeable without being overwhelming.

Mixed Opinions On The F-150 PowerBoost And Widowmaker Combo

Of course, opinions vary. Some YouTube commenters remark in disfavor with, “For me, I still prefer the sound of the Coyote V8,” and “Sounds like a Chevy 3.1 with a bad muffler.” Yet, others appreciated the effort, “Really deep sound. I like it,” and “I have this same muffler on my Silverado 5.3, sounds hella good.”

Regrettably, there’s no dyno testing, so we don’t learn if the Widowmaker setup adds extra output to the already substantial specs coming from the F-150’s PowerBoost system (rated at 430 HP and 570 lb-ft of torque).
