Factory and EPA ratings for cars sometimes seem like they just fall out of the sky or get chosen at random by a couple throws of a dart. Case in point is the official recent range rating of the Porsche Taycan 4S, which was immediately smashed in real-world testing—or Car and Driver's dyno test of the new Toyota Supra, which showed horsepower and torque figures well in excess of the factory claims.

It behooves any buyer of a performance vehicle to do their research when it comes to manufacturer stat sheet highlights like horsepower, 0-60 mph times, and MPG ratings. Luckily, the internet typically has all the answers. Now, an addition to the real-world books on the 2019 Dodge Challenger Hellcat Redeye comes in the form of a standing-mile test filmed and posted to YouTube.

How Fast Is Too Fast

Ever since the one-year-only Challenger Demon went out of production, the Hellcat Redeye has been the most powerful muscle car on the market. With a 797-horsepower, supercharged V8 under the hood, it stands apart even from other monstrous modern muscle cars like the Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 ("only" 760 horses) or the Chevrolet Camaro in ZL1 trim (a truly disappointing 650 horsepower there).

But the Challenger is also a massive car, from its wide fender flares to its curb weight. That means that real-world performance might not quite live up to the numbers on a piece of paper, so proud owners understandably chomp at the bit to put their cars to the test.

At the John Bohmer Proving Grounds, this Redeye did just that, blasting through a standing mile—after a bit of a slippery start, to be fair—and maxing out at 177 miles per hour. For context, that's only four miles per hour less than the McLaren 570S, which is a legit supercar that benefits from much lower weight and drag, though it also has fewer ponies mounted amidships.
