It's no wonder that a great number of vehicles are named after animals. After all most of work achieved now by automobiles were done before by animals. Likewise, vehicles take the name of animals known for their speed, power, strength or sleekness. Mustang, Cobra and Viper are some of the well-known cars named after animals. There are times, though, that carmakers name their cars, supercars and SUVs after weird animals.

Honey Bee, Sable, Cayman And Marlin

First is the Datsun B-210 Honey Bee, which is essentially a special low-spec model sold in the United States with a special stripe and Bee decal. The Mercury Sable was basically the twin of the Ford Taurus, and we have no idea why the brand chose to name this vehicle after a a small omnivorous mammal living in Mongolia.

Porcshe named its Cayman sports car after caiman, a reptile subspecies related to alligators. These reptiles are known for smoothly gliding through water. There's also the AMC Marlin two-door fastback which name was derived from the water large, long-nosed marine fish known for being quick in the sea.

Panda, Stag, Urus And Vixen

On the other hand, the popular Fiat Panda city car is named after a cute, friendly bear native to south central portion of China. It's a city car, so it's cute in size. Built in the United Kingdom, the Triumph Stag is a 2+2 sports tourer which name is inspired by the male deer, a symbol of both power and speed.

Lamborghini loves naming its cars after bull breeds. In the case of the Urus, its derived from urus, an extinct large, buffed cattle. The TVR Vixen is named after a female fox, which nimble disposition matches the character of the sports coupe.

Volkswagen probably cannot decide on the name of its new SUV. So, the carmaker made people decide, and Tiguan -- combination of tiger and iguana – stood out. Sometimes, a vehicle name makes no sense, but it sticks.
