There’s something very thrilling about muscle cars, more so when these very classic cars go up against each other. So here’s another very cool drag race, brought to you by the YouTube channel Cars and Zebras. This one involves two muscle cars in their prime.

The good news is that both the cars are from the same parent company, General Motors. The better news is that you get to see both race down the quarter-mile, hellbent on besting each other with their muscular prowess. With similar performance numbers from the same era, it's anyone's guess who will pass the finish line first.

Meet The Muscle Car Contenders

The two cars in this video are not just both muscle cars but belong to the golden era of muscle cars when horsepower was supreme. The muscle car concept did not only rise to popularity in the ‘60s, it became near all-pervasive with each automaker trying to stuff the biggest engine with the most power in aerodynamic bodies.

In this video, we have a 1967 Pontiac GTO, carrying a 6.5-liter V8 rated at 360 horsepower. It runs on 3.90 rear gears and a four-speed manual transmission. Its rival for this drag race is a 1968 Hurst Olds, bearing a 7.4-liter V8 rated at 390 horsepower. It runs on a TH400 3-speed automatic with 3.91 rear gears and comes wearing Peruvian silver paint. This was in fact the only color of the year.

The stock 1/4 mile times of the cars are 13.77 seconds with a top speed of 103.91 mph for the Olds and 14.21 seconds with a top speed of 102.97 mph for the Pontiac GTO. On the drag strip, stock times are meaningless without a great driver.

The drag race in this video has a surprising result. The Olds manages to run the quarter-mile in 13.95 seconds, at a top speed of 93.83 mph. While impressive, it is not enough to take home the win. The Pontiac GTO whizzes by at a top seed of 104.13 mph, racing to the finish at 13.68 seconds.

It may not be a big win, speaking margin-wise, but it is a legitimate win nonetheless. This proves why the GTO is still the muscle car boss, even more than half a century down the line. Of course, both the cars look absolutely stunning as they speed down the horizon, so the aesthetic vision is a win for everyone.
