When a Chinook helicopter delivers a haulage container to a harbor dock, you have to wonder what's lurking inside. And when the haulage container’s doors are bound with large chains, you really start worrying. It looks like a scene from the movie Jurassic Park. Is some prehistoric man-eating dinosaur sedated inside? Or has King Kong reared his ugly head again.

The container doors suddenly burst open, and we get to see the crazy creature inside. That’s the opening scene of a YouTube video on the Top Gear UK channel.

Ken Block’s Sightseeing Tour Of London

Through plumes of white smoke, and the unmistakable soundtrack of his V8, Ken Block and the insane 'Hoonicorn' Ford Mustang emerge. The low-slung black drift-mobile takes off through the shipyard, and blasts onto the streets of London. We get a ringside seat as Block drives the custom Ford at breakneck speeds along roads that normally have a 30 mph speed limit, and are jam-packed with traffic. Not sure if Block's Hoonicorn was subject to London's congestion charge.

Block drives like an enraged hooligan, as he pushes the Mustang to it limits through the narrow city streets, before stopping to pick up Matt Le Blanc. The first thing Matt asks is “Do I need to wear a helmet?”, as Ken hits the gas pedal even harder, and fills the howling rally car with white exhaust smoke, and replies "I suggest it."

As they take in some of the most famous sightseeing locations in the world, Ken cranks out lots of tight donuts, screaming power slides, and bonkers hand-brake turns. They tear past St Pauls Cathedral, jet across Tower Bridge, and burn lots of rubber in Canary Wharf. The V8’s growl reaches deafening pitch when they pass through the built-up streets of the financial district.

The onboard camera captures Ken in action. Watching him work the Mustang’s 6-speed transmission is epic. All you see is his right hand constantly jabbing at the tall rally-style gearstick. While Le Blanc tries to remain calm, cracking jokes, pretending to read a London sightseeing guide book.

When they take a secret route below street level Ken opens up the highly customized Ford, flames pour out of the front splitter as he connects with the tarmac at high speed.

The aggressive-looking black Mustang looks like it's an escaped convict, desperately trying to evade the law. With its bulky wheel arches, over-sized front and rear spoilers, and dark, stripped-down appearance, you could almost imagine it being an extra in Michael Jackson’s ‘Bad’ video.

After watching Block's masterful driving, and the insane stunts in his repertoire, they reach the Mall. From there they get a police motorcycle escort up to Buckingham Palace, where Ken turns up the V8’s volume in a hilarious attempt to get the Queen’s attention. The whole film is brilliantly shot, and when Ken returns the Hoonicorn back into the Chinook at the end, it left us wanting more.

The Unexpected Aftermath Of Ken Block Tearing London Apart

The BBC requested special permission to film, and they got the green light to have small sections of road closed off at strictly defined timings. Block was fully briefed on each of the target stunt locations. And, in reality, he had to stick to the 30 mph legal speed limit on route to the designated areas.

One of the sites that they did unleash the Hoonicorn at was Whitehall, home to the famous Cenotaph memorial. The century-old statue is a sacred tribute to fallen war heroes from WW1 and WW2. Ken did his thing, and tore up the street with donuts and 180s, depositing rubber marks all over the place, in a sequence of film that cost the BBC around $150,000.

What they didn't plan for was the outpour of outrage that followed. Senior military figures and British politicians felt that the whole thing was disrespectful to the British Armed Forces. The result was a media frenzy, and Ken Block’s name hit the UK news headlines for all the wrong reasons.

In response, Top gear’s lead presenter, Chris Evans, had to release this statement; "On behalf of the Top Gear team and Matt, I would like to apologize unreservedly for what these images seem to portray. I can completely understand all this fury. Retrospectively, it was unwise to be anywhere near the Cenotaph."

The BBC ended up cutting the Cenotaph footage from the show. And, even to this day, it has never aired. But leaked mobile phone videos are available online, which reveal Block’s controversial antics near the famous War Memorial.

The Hoonicorn Mustang, And Where It Is Today

The Hoonicorn project started in 2013. Ford wanted to demonstrate their ability to create something really special, that would get everyone talking, and boy, did they succeed. They took a 1965 Mustang, and loaded it with a 6.7 liter Roush-Yates twin-turbocharged engine. Initially they had it sending 845 horsepower to each wheel, but it wasn't long before they ramped it up to a whopping 1400 hp.

To keep weight down they used carbon fiber for the body panels, and designed a custom-built lightweight tube frame chassis. Ford along with the Hoonigan team used a custom suspension system from ASD Motorsports, which could easily be at home in any dedicated race car.

As a result of all this hard work, the Hoonicorn is capable of speeds that most supercars can only dream of. It can sprint to sixty mph in 1.8 seconds, and reach an eye-watering 255 mph, flat out.

Ken has taken the celebrity Mustang all over the world, pulling stunts and winning challenges in most major cities, with his Gymkhana TV documentary show.

Today, he is no longer in partnership with Ford, they parted ways in 2021. So, as a result, he had to return the Hoonicorn to its rightful owners; Ford. As for what the Hoonicorn Mustang is doing today, its exact whereabouts are unknown. But we hope that Ford doesn't keep this legendary creature penned up for too long!
