If someone would've came up to you 10 years ago and said they wanted to take a car and land an impossible stunt, you would have most likely envisioned doing the stunt in a BMW M3 or even one of the lovely cheap-but-great sports cars like a Miata. But if that same person came up to you and said that they wanted to do the stunt in a Kia, you would have immediately started searching for the nearest psychiatric hospital to drop them off at. Fast forward to 2020, and that is exactly what Kia and famed stunt driver Jalil Jay Lynch just did with the new Kia K5 GT. The stunt in question is known as the flat spin 360, and up until now nobody has ever even attempted one.

Spinning Into Control

A monumental stunt like this calls for a monumental team, and that is exactly who Kia called for the task. Kia, Jalil Lynch, and action film superstar director Darrin Prescott knew they had to execute something insane for their spot during the 72nd Emmy Awards, and the flat spin 360 immediately peaked their interest with its immense complexity. Although at a first glance you might be wondering why nobody has even attempted this stunt before, but the level of precision needed to complete it surely justifies the reasons.

Even just to complete a stunt like launching a car off of a ramp, and safely landing it on another ramp is actually a rather difficult task. It requires quite a bit of physics and math understanding to work out just how far the ramps need to be apart to safely land in the sweet spot of the second ramp, and then also requires the driver to be able to keep the car at a constant steady speed pre-determined by said physics and math. Now add on the fact that not only will the car be flying through the air, but the car will be flying through the air while spinning just after its weight gets shifted around while still on the fist ramp. Weight transfer can very easily make a car unstable and hard to control even when on a flat smooth road, one can only imagine what it can do to a car while flying through the air. The amount of calculation and driver precision needed to complete this stunt is enough to make anyone's head spin like the K5 GT.

In recent years, Kia has been trying to make some very interesting moves in the sports car world; and with the success of the Kia Stinger GT, it appears the world is listening. Although many would've expected Kia to use the Stinger in completing this stunt, Kia knew they had to think big to prove that the new K5 and its available 290 hp and 311 lb-ft of torque can play in the wake of its flagship sibling.
