Lamborghini's Urus super SUV has been making the rounds online recently, as just about everyone wants to know just how potent the beastly Italian product truly is in the real world. Hennessey recently performed a solid baseline test by putting a Urus on the dyno before upgrading it and then racing it against a Rolls-Royce Wraith. But now, the YouTube channel Throttle House has pitted a Lamborghini Urus against a Mercedes-AMG G63 for a fun drag race—and though this would seem like an unfair fight in most cases, the G-Wagen here is hiding a bit of a tune under its boxy exterior to help keeps things a bit more level.

On The Line

From the factory, Lamborghini chose to forego the firm's quintessential V12 and V10 powerplants in the hopes that a torquey twin-turbocharged V8 from Volkswagen AG would help improve the Urus' low-end grunt. The result is that the 4.0-liter powerplant, which also features in models like the Audi RS Q8 and Porsche Cayenne, among others, produces a whopping 641 horsepower and 627 lb-ft of torque, the latter available down low at 2,250 RPM.

Thanks to an all-wheel-drive system, launch control, and a curb weight of 4,850 pounds, the Urus achieves a claimed 3.6-second 0-60 time on the way to a quarter-mile in 11.3 seconds, according to Car and Driver.

The Mercedes-AMG G63, meanwhile, weighs well over 1,000 pounds more than the Urus while receiving motivation from the factory in the form of a similarly-rated 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 that produces 577 horsepower and an identical 627 lb-ft of twist. That would normally mean the Urus should be capable of demolishing the bigger, heavier competition, though the G-Wagen being tested by Throttle House has received a tune and is now producing a claimed 700 horsepower—at the wheels. Watch the vid to see whether that kind of power upgrade can compensate for the G63's natural disinclination for straight-line acceleration.
