Porsche's Tesla rival, the Taycan, has hit the streets here in the United States, as well as Europe, leading to plenty of happy new owners uploading clips showing just how much they love their new toys. And so far, the EV from Stuttgart seems to be poised to take down Elon Musk's current crop of commuter cars—though the forthcoming Tesla Roadster might have something to say about that. Now, a new video shows that Porsche might have even understated some of the Taycan's stats, as a Turbo S variant was caught on camera being taken to (and beyond) the factory top speed on the Autobahn.

Quiet Power

From the factory, Porsche claims the range-topping Taycan Turbo S can produce up to 761 horsepower and 774 lb-ft of torque in Launch Control Mode, which is good enough for a 0-60 mph of 2.6 seconds with a standing start producing 1.2 G of acceleration. Meanwhile, Car and Driver tested a Taycan Turbo S and achieved a quicker time of only 2.4 seconds.

The power of EV powertrains and instantaneously available torque is well known by now, though the Taycan has an advantage in the top-speed department over Tesla's cars because Porsche decided to use a two-speed gearbox rather than a single forward gear.

Having employed two forward gears helps Porsche claim a top speed of 162 miles per hour for the Taycan Turbo S. But the YouTube clip above clearly shows the car managing to hit 167 miles per hour on the Autobahn, a significantly higher number than the factory rating. Meanwhile, Tesla limits the Model S to 155 miles per hour. Of course, with a starting price of $185,000 that can quickly jump much higher, Porsche fans expect the Taycan to be better than a Tesla in every way imaginable. Luckily, this latest video continues a trend showing that that's exactly what's going on here.
