Today marks the next evolution of McLaren as the new Artura supercar turns the page into a brand new era for the British carmaker. Over the last few months, McLaren has teased the Artura over and over again with close-up photos and trickles of pertinent hard data about the car. Today, however, that trickle turned into a powerful stream with a full launch and all the information we could want about the latest Woking creation that's set to take on the likes of Porsche, Lamborghini, and Ferrari.

The McLaren Artura Comes With 670 Horsepower

At the heart of the Artura is a hybrid powertrain. The dino-powered portion of which is a brand new twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 that of its own merit produces some 577 horsepower. Combine that with the electrified portion of the thrust inducement package and it results in a truly menacing 670 horsepower and 531 ft-lbs of torque. That's on par if not ahead of rivals in both Germany and Italy.

It's powerful enough to rocket the Artura to 120 mph in just 8.3 seconds. This new engine will rev to roughly 7,800 rpm and top out at a speed of 205 mph. The electric battery can power the car on its own for up to 20 miles and takes some minutes to charge. McLaren hasn't stopped at the drivetrain though—the rest of this car is new too.

Achieving Speed With Batteries Required New Engineering

Via McLaren

As we all know, batteries are heavy, and that's one major reason why automakers—especially performance-oriented ones—have stayed far away from them until recently. Weight damages every performance metric, acceleration, braking, handling, and more. To combat this, McLaren has not only created an incredibly light electrified powertrain package—weighing just 80 lbs according to some sources—but they've also introduced the McLaren Carbon Lightweight Architecture (or MCLA). This all-new architecture will be the new road forward for all McLaren models and offers the company a stronger skeleton than ever before without creating other compromises.

Technology Is Packed into The Artura

Via McLaren

The Artura doesn't simply do with an old kit from the McLaren parts bin. The company has clearly taken everything learned from its history to build this supercar. The E-differential inside the all-new 8-speed transmission is built to provide the most responsive and engaging feel possible. The suspension is all new as is the electrical packaging itself. While clearly regulations have forced automakers to push efficiency to the front, it's nice to see that McLaren has fully embraced the future and is actively working hard to not only be greener but to keep the wild DNA of its history intact. Artura is Celtic for noble. I can't think of a more noble attitude for a supercar company to have.
