We are now living in a world where cars can deliver unprecedented quickness and speeds. Thanks to various automotive technologies applied at unmatched pace, carmakers – especially those targeting customers with the need for speed – are able to develop and produce cars that could accelerate from nil to 62 mph in just 3.0 seconds or faster.

Gone were the days when speed addicts can’t even bump up the power levels of their cars without tapping aftermarket tuners. Now, high-power high-speed cars come out straight from the factory. Even in factory form, they could already offer insane degrees of performance.

A good number of carmakers and brands are already offering such dynamic drives. These include GM, Ford, Stellantis, Ferrari, McLaren, Bugatti, Porsche, BMW, Audi and Mercedes, as well as Koenigsegg, Rimac, Tesla and more. It’s always fun and thrilling to see powerful cars from the carmakers slug it out on a drag race.

Carwow, a UK-based platform for purchasing new and used cars, has decided it would race a supercar against a super sedan. So, it brought a Ferrari 812 Superfast to go all out against a new BMW M5 CS. Carwow’s main man Mat Watson took part in the race, which was captured vividly in a video upload on the company’s YouTube channel.

Ferrari 812 Superfast Races Against BMW M5 CS

Both the Ferrari 812 Superfast and the BMW M5 CS are incredibly quick and fast cars. Their specs are way beyond what an average driver could imagine, allowing them to outrun most cars on the road with ease. So, which car is quicker?

Mat sought the answer by making the 812 Superfast and the M5 CS race against each other. These races include a quarter-mile drag race, two half-mile 50-mph rolling races and a braking contest. Of course, it is better to understand how each car works based on their specs.

Pushing Boundaries With Ferrari 812 Superfast

At first glimpse, the Ferrari 812 Superfast looks like its immediate predecessor, the Ferrari F12berlinetta. Well, the similarities are not surprising since the 812 Superfast is essentially derived from the F12berlinetta. Looks aside, both the 812 Superfast and the F12berlinetta employ the same family of V12 engine (F140), although the former employs the F140 GA version with a larger displacement at 6.5 liters.

In the 812 Superfast, the 6.5-liter V12 engine features a 350-bar direct injection and variable geometry inlet tracts. This V12 mill has the capability to generate 788 hp of max output at 8,500 rpm and 529 lb-ft of peak torque available at 7,000 rpm. The engine can rev up to 8,900 rpm.

Ferrari installed a quick-shifting (plus 30%) seven-speed dual-clutch transmission to send this massive power to the rear wheels. Interestingly, the carmaker mounted the gearbox on the rear axle to give the 812 Superfast a more ideal weight distribution.

With a curb weight of around 3,968 lbs, the 812 Superfast offers a healthy power-to-weight ratio. As for performance, the 812 Superfast can zoom from nil to 60 mph in just 2.7 seconds and go as fast as 211 mph.

M5 CS Has Enough Power To Outrun Sports Cars

The new BMW M5 CS stands on a higher level than the M5 Competition, which was potent enough to outrun a 840-hp Dodge Challenger SRT Demon on a quarter mile. Compared to the M5 Competition, the M5 CS offers more power and less weight, as well as track-optimizes suspension and brakes. With four doors and enough room for four, the M5 CS is nothing short of a super sedan.

The M5 CS is an exclusive, special version of the hardcore M5 sedan; it is only available for the 2022 model year. It is powered by S63 4.4-liter M TwinPower turbo V8 mill tuned to deliver 627 hp of max output at 6,000 rpm and 553 lb-ft of peak torque available at a wider band (between 1,800 and 5,950 rpm).

While the M5 CS is a bit heavier than the 812 Superfast at around 4,023 lbs, it is lighter than its closest M5 sibling. BMW M achieved his by extensively employing carbon fiber reinforced plastic on the hood, roof, front splitter, rear diffuser as well as rear spoiler. BMW M also used M Carbon ceramic brakes and reduced soundproofing.

Supported by an 8-speed M Steptronic automatic transmission (with Drivelogic) and the M xDrive all-wheel drive system, the M5 CS can sprint zero to 60 mph in just 2.9 seconds and reach a top speed of 190 mph with the M Driver’s Package.

Deciding The Better Hardcore Car On The Straight Line

In terms of both power and weight, and the Ferrari 812 Superfast has the edge. In paper, it can sprint quicker than the BMW M5 CS (2.7 vs 2.9 seconds). The M5 CS, however, puts power to all wheels on the ground, giving it better chances, especially on the start. This was evident on the first quarter-mile race between the two cars.

On the quarter-mile drag race, the M5 CS had a rocket start, immediately creating a gap against the 812 Superfast. But Ferrari managed to chip away the lead. Both cars crossed the finish line at 10.9 seconds, but the BMW was ahead by a few feet.

The second run was a 50-mph half-mile rolling race. As soon as both cars hit 50 mph, the 812 Superfast took advantage of its higher power and lower weight, leaving the BMW far behind. It was practically an easy win for the Italian sports car.

They repeated the 50-mph half-mile rolling race, but this time both cars were in manual mode. It was the same story as the first rolling race, leaving the same amount of disappointment in Mat’s face. The M5 CS had its revenge on the braking contest, which it won only by a few feet.
