Most current Volvo owners probably bought their cars or SUVs because they believed Volvo offered outstanding safety within a stylish, luxurious package. That reputation for safety still stands despite a recent spate of fairly frightening recalls from Volvo, helping to solidify Volvo's caricature as a brand that's perfect for soccer moms. But once upon a time, Volvo marketed its cars as both safe and sporty, with excellent driving dynamics and the long-gone rear-wheel-drive layout. But exactly zero Volvos ever could have hoped to keep up with the insanity of this build out of Abu Dhabi that features a Lamborghini V10 dropped under the hood of the iconic 245 wagon, from the generation affectionately known as "bricks." And now, in the latest update on the project, builder Peter Björk shares his difficulties trying to install a new clutch, among other mechanical components.

Built To Drift

The Volvo in question here is specifically a 1975 model year 245 wagon, while the engine is a Lamborghini V10 sourced from a Gallardo. In a series of YouTube posts, Björk proved how difficult it will be to shoehorn a 5.0-liter powerplant under the hood of the stately station wagon—plus, his plans to drop in a BMW 535i six-speed manual transmission. He's also the owner of BJP Race, which explains the motivation behind the build.

Clearly, things don't all go smoothly, as the engine has now been removed from the station wagon so that its builder can install a new crossmember for the transmission. While he's at it, he'll be replacing the flywheel and clutch.

The Struggle Is Real

All the work goes into transforming the wagon into a drifter and the video does feature some time with the car running as it does donuts around what appears to be a traffic circle. But the majority of the footage dives into the mechanical processes, including designing a crank pulley adapter before 3D printing it into reality. Lastly, he goes into some of the wiring issues for the ignition system, the latest in a long string of what's probably fairly common challenges when dropping in a 30-year-newer engine.
