A massive motorhome stuck in weird places – such as soft sand – is a huge dilemma. It can't be simply pulled out; an equally gigantic vehicle is needed to recover it and pull it to stable ground. Casey's Off Road Recovery has the right vehicle for the job – a five-ton 1970 Kaiser M813A. This 6x6 military truck may not be able to handle an apocalypse, but it recently demonstrated its pulling capability in Utah.

A Hero To The Rescue

Every year, the Sand Hollow State Park welcomes thousands of visitors thanks to an event called Trail Hero. Since the whole area is soft sand, some vehicles do get stuck. One of these is a motorhome used by the sponsors of the event. It picked the wrong spot to park, eventually finding itself buried to the frame.

Other vehicles on site apparently tried but failed to pull the motorhome out of the sand. But there was one vehicle that succeeded on the recovery job – a 1970 Kaiser M813A truck. A former Tactical Fire Tender from one of the local fire departments, this 6x6 military truck was purchased by Casey's Off Road Recovery on Govdeals.com.

It might be 50 years old, but this Kaiser M813A is capable of accomplishing recovery jobs, especially when Casey's Off Road Recovery has to pull large vehicles out of sticky situations. Measuring 26'7" in length, 8'2" in width and 9'9" in height, this 21,020-pound 6x6 truck was originally built by AM General for military use.

Serving as the core of this Kaiser M813A is a Cummins NH250 engine providing 240 hp of max output, as transmitted to the wheels through a five-speed, two-range transmission. It offers a top speed of just 52 mph and an operational range of 350 miles. Featuring air brakes, this five-ton truck sits live beam axles on leaf springs and rides on 1400x20 super single tires.

First Job Well Done

Armed with Yankum ropes – kinetic recovery ropes that makes it easier to recover vehicles from loose terrain – the 1970 Kaiser M813A had no trouble pulling the motorhome out of the sand. According to Casey's Off Road Recovery, it was the "first job" for its 6x6 military truck.
