The new Toyota GR Supra still needs to prove itself as being more than a marketing stunt by Toyota, a sad state of affairs that doesn't look on its way toward improvement given the immediate changes to the revived nameplate coming in 2021. After the legendary powerplant in the fourth-gen Supra, the 2JZ-GTE, established itself as a tuner favorite thanks to being able to handle massive power upgrades without complementary engine teardowns and rebuilds, Toyota's decision to sell what is essentially a rebadged BMW remains baffling. An equally baffling project, however, is being documented on YouTube these days, where Nugget Garage has taken a MkIV Supra and dropped in a 1UZ Toyota V8 as the powerplant of choice. But now, in the latest build installment, the car has hit the dyno for early testing and the results look pretty good, to say the least.

Ready To Rumble

Nugget Garage has been releasing videos covering this Supra build since April of 2020 and the project looks pretty bold. The plan is to drop the four-cam Toyota 1UZ V8 into the Supra's engine bay and, with help from a rear-mounted turbo, create something even better than a "normal" 2JZ-GTE build. The entire process involves serious customization, from the steering rack to the exhaust, intercooler piping, and fuel lines. But now, as the setup comes together and looks ready to run, it's time to do some early testing on the dynamometer.

Encouraging Results

This episode features the car getting some last-minute sorting before being placed on a hub dyno—not testing at the wheels here. The results sound pretty encouraging, with the powerplant hitting a peak of 672 horsepower while running on E40 fuel. Teasing the next video, Scott and Chris promise to bump things up to another level with a test at 30 pounds of boost on E85 fuel.
