The Alfa Romeo 4C is not faring well in the market and is not a popular choice for anyone looking for a sports car. We agree the slightly bug-like Alfa Romeo 4C is not everyone’s cup of tea, considering the cramped cabin and the need to crawl in and out of it.
But it handles well and is a fun ride, even though it comes minus a manual transmission. But when it comes to the US market, the Alfa Romeo is far overshadowed by the likes of the muscle-sports cars like the Mustang, Camaro, Charger, and Challengers.
But there are plenty of other overrated sports cars in the market, the kind we’d much rather pass on for the Alfa Romeo 4C, for all its lunacies. These sports cars are expensive and often overrated to the point of becoming legends, but honestly, many say they are nothing but urban legends. And not all that good as sports cars should be.
10 Nissan GT-R: Unchanged, Overrated Sports Car
Don’t get us wrong. The original Nissan GT-R, the one that burst on the scene in 2007 was a great car with a 3.8-liter twin-turbo V6 engine that made 480 horses and a dreamy gearbox. But that was then and over the years, it seems Nissan got so busy basking in the glory of the car, it did not update the car at all.
Today, it's an overrated sports car. One that has milked its legacy for its worth and not moved forward with the times. It's way more expensive than before, heavier, and not as nimble as the competition.
9 Bugatti Veyron: Overpriced One-Trick Wonder
For many, the Veyron is the ultimate dream car, mostly because it's so expensive, few can own it. The Veyron, at launch, boasted an 8.0-liter W16 engine and made a little under 1,000 horses. Other special editions came with even more horsepower at 1,200.
But the thing about the Veyron is that all that power is best for a straight line zip, it’s a heavyweight and does not corner all that well. Plus, it's crazy expensive and best left to those who have too much money to know what to do with it. For normal mortals, it's an overrated sports car.
8 Ferrari LaFerrari: Dated & Overrated Sports Car
Most people would give an arm and a leg to get their hands on a Ferrari, but when it comes to the most overhyped of them all, the Ferrari LaFerrari, we’d like to pass. Because other than a name full of itself, and a 6.3-liter mill that makes 789 horses, there’s not much going on for the LaFerrari.
It’s a luxurious sports car that comes with an eye-watering price tag but offers nothing particularly unique about itself. Many feel that the competition outshines it, making it a somewhat overrated sports car.
7 Porsche 911: Over-Worshipped Sports Car
The 911 purists are likely to have a field day with this, but honestly, the way the Porsche Cayman has managed to outshine the 911 at every step shows that basically, the 911 is a slightly flawed car, made good with superb engineering.
The GT versions have often seen engine trouble and while we feel the 911 is a great car, undoubtedly, it seems like it may have more potential if Porsche truly decided to put its heart and soul. And we are not alone in feeling so because many feel the 911 is fast becoming an overrated sports car.
6 BMW E30 M3: Overrated Classic Sports Car
The BMW E30 M3 was a great car, bearing a rather small inline-four engine that managed to make 250 horsepower in its strongest avatar, but had enough torque to give it some serious speed So yes, it’s a good car, and fun to drive.
But considering it has sold for more than $100,000 at times, we just think that while it's good, it's not “that good” to be turned into an over-expensive classic, because the M30 was never supposed to be that. It's not an overrated sports car but it's fast turning into an overpriced one.
5 Toyota Supra MKIV: Overrated 10-Second Sports Car
The Toyota Supra, F&F’s 10-second car is good but again, a tad overrated in its appeal. It had a powerful engine working to its advantage and can be modified to turn into a great street vehicle with plenty of creds.
But as a stock vehicle, it's hardly the fast sports car of your dreams and has problems with suspension, hydraulics as well as cooling fans. It’s a cool car when worked on but otherwise, stock, it's an overrated sports car.
4 Lotus Evora: Overplush, Overrated Sports Car
When Lotus began to make cars, it began to rise in fame and name for making lightweight sports cars that were a bit bare-boned but so much fun to drive, no one cared for plush. Then they made the Evora. Now, it’s a beautiful car but one that is very opposite to any other Lotus car.
It's plush and luxurious but all the comforts come at a price, and in the Evora, it’s the less than stellar handling, and build quality issues. Lotus should just stick to its lightweight formula because the Evora is an overrated sports car.
3 Subaru BRZ: Just Not Enough As A Sports Car
The Subaru BRZ, along with its brother from another mother, the Toyota GT, is an entry-level sports car. And it’s a hail Mary for many who want a sports car but cannot afford the truly expensive ones. Only, we call it an overrated sports car because as a stock vehicle, it's fun only till you get used to it. Post that, it feels powerless.
Of course, there is plenty of aftermarket fun to be had with the BRZ, with modifications that can add to your driving experience. But as a stock car, it’s a bit boring.
2 Nissan 240SX: Just A Great Chassis
There, we said it. The Nissan 240SX is an overrated sports car. Because it takes a ton of work, money, and man-hours to turn it into the pedestal car that people seem to put it upon. And one of that main work and expenses is an engine swap, along with a whole suspension change.
The Nissan 240SX as a stock sports car is just about as interesting as soggy KFC and makes you feel very let down if you forked over a huge amount for it. It's cool after a cartload of stuff goes into it, but that holds for any car.
1 Jaguar F-Type: Fails Its Legacy
Since the English letter F comes after E, Jag decided to fill in the very big boots of the E-Type, with the F-Type, and therein lies the first mistake. The F-Type is not a bad car, but it's not anything like the E-Type, period. It lies between an entry-level sports car and a supercar, price-wise, and again, does not fit into either bracket.
The Porsche Cayman is cheaper and drives better. And at the same time, the similar-priced Audi R8 outclasses it, everywhere. So, the F-Type is just meh, and an overrated sports car.
