The Ford Motor Company is calling their all-new, all-electric 2022 F-150 Lightning, a game-changer – a “powerhouse that can power your house.” Ford doesn’t consider the newest addition to their F-series just a truck, they tout it as an “experience like no other.”
Ford torture-tested their first 100 percent electric truck with the same regime that their flagship F-150 trucks endure and were able to brand the 2022 F-150 Lightning as “Built Ford Tough.” The Lightning’s announcement immediately piqued the interest of truck buyers and reservations of 100,000 units were confirmed within three weeks of its reveal this past summer.
With an expected delivery of spring 2022, the Ford Lightning comes to market with a standard 4x4 system powered by two onboard motors. Ford tells us, “it’s tough, it’s powerful;” but that’s not all. There’s much more to this electric pickup. Here’s what you need to know about the first-ever solely-electric Ford F-150 Lightning.
11 Electrified Power With Instantaneous Torque
The Ford F-150 Lightning boasts faster acceleration than any previously produced F-150. Peak acceleration can be seen in just 0.6 seconds.
The extended-range battery provides a targeted 563-horsepower and 775 lb-ft of torque. It's 0 to 60 time hovers in the 4-second range.
10 Transforms Into An Extra Power Source
With Ford Intelligent Backup Power, the F-150 Lightning can transform into a home’s power source when the grid goes down. The Lightning can power a home for three to 10 days, depending on electric usage and the level of charge on the truck’s battery at the start of operation.
A properly equipped home is required for the feature. It’s just one added bonus for Ford F-150 Lightning owners.
9 Operates As An Onboard Generator
Another truck transformation is possible when the F-150 Lightning turns into a generator. Ford’s Pro Power Onboard feature offers 9.6 kW of power with 11 outlets.
Four 120V outlets can be found in the frunk, two more are located in the cab and the bed has four. When more power is needed, a 240V outlet is also provided in the bed.
8 Carries A Ton And Pulls Five
The F-150 Lightning has a maximum payload capability of 2,000 lbs with a standard-range battery and 18-inch wheels. Work or play, regardless of use, the Lightning is built to tow. Its maximum available towing capacity is rated at 10,000 lbs.
The 10,000-lb towing capacity is specific to the Pro, XLT, and LARIAT models. To achieve maximum towing, the extended-range battery and Max Trailer Tow Package are required. Other variables such as cargo, passengers, or configurations can alter capacity.
7 300-Mile Range
The Ford F-150 Lightning has two battery options that can be chosen to meet a buyer’s needs. A 230-mile range is accomplished by the standard-range battery.
An extended-range battery puts an additional 50 miles on the Platinum model and a total of 300 miles for an XLT or LARIAT. Miles are listed in targeted EPA-estimated ranges.
6 Overnight Charging Is Real
The Mobile Power Cord with a 240V connector comes standard with all F-150 Lightning trucks. You can expect to fully charge the truck in 20 hours with the mobile unit.
The Ford Charge Station Pro is available for home installation and charging. The Charge Station Pro achieves 30 miles of range for every hour of charge. The full charge occurs overnight (eight hours). Public charging can be found coast-to-coast with 70,000 chargers available in the BlueOval Charge Network.
5 Off-Road Ready
Just because it's electric, doesn’t keep it off the trails. Built off-road ready, the F-150 Lightning’s dual motors push power to all four wheels.
It is equipped with underbody protection. The lithium-ion battery pack is shielded by an exon structure.
4 Latest Tech Wasn’t Forgotten
A variety of connected services are built into the Lightning, with Ford Power Up for over-the-air software updates. FordPass Integration is connected for vehicle diagnostics.
Ford BlueCruise offers users an advanced option with select-area hands-free driving, utilizing a driver-facing cam and radar-sensing capability. Currently, more than 130,000 miles of North American roads are designated as Hands-Free Blue Zones, where Ford BlueCruise is available. The Phone As A Key feature is self-explanatory and can be enabled to remote access and start the Lightning without a key, fob, or even removal of the phone from a pocket.
3 Designed To Get The Job Done With A Frunk And Workspace
What would be the engine bay is replaced with the Mega Power Frunk (FRont trUNK). It offers 14.1 cubic feet of space and 400-pounds of payload capacity. As previously mentioned, the frunk offers four power outlets.
An Interior Work Surface is available for a table/desk that deploys from the center console once the shifter is stowed. It offers a workable space for lunch on the go or a laptop desk on the road.
2 Must-Have Options Enhance Convenience
When looking for fast and easy, there are some must-have options to add to a Lightning build. Pro Trailer Hitch Assist controls the steering wheel, throttle, and brake when hooking up a trailer.
Onboard Scales measure payload and Smart Hitch calculates tongue weight, proper weight distribution, and hitch overload. These features report info on the display screen or on a phone or mobile device with the FordPass App.
1 Purchase And Maintenance Costs: Price Swings From 40 To 91 Grand
The standard-range battery base price of the Ford F-150 Lightning Pro model starts at $38,974, the XLT at $53,974, the LARIAT at $67,474, and the Platinum at $90,874. Upgrading to an extended-range battery bumps the starting price of an XLT to $72,474 and the LARIAT to $77,474.
Ford F-150 Lightning owners may qualify for energy Utility Incentives for up to $7,500 Federal, in addition to variable state incentives. Ford estimates scheduled maintenance costs over eight years or 100,000 miles to decrease by more than 40 percent compared to an F-150 gasser, specifically the 2.7-liter EcoBoost model.
