The Hummer holds a legendary status in the automotive market. The vehicle started out as a military beast, which may explain the existence of street-legal military Hummer models today. At some point, it also found its way to the civilian market, becoming a part of the supersized American lifestyle.

Today, however, the Hummer is met with mixed feelings. Increasing concerns towards carbon emissions have left people wondering if the Hummer should make a comeback. That said, GM is getting this beast ready for a relaunch and there are things about the new Hummer that will surprise you.

10 It’s Under The GMC Brand

The Hummer was initially developed and marketed by AM General. During the 90s, however, General Motors managed to purchase the rights to distribute and market the vehicle to the public. Over the years, its models were marketed as Hummer H1, Hummer H2, and Hummer H3.

In contrast, the upcoming Hummer is officially known as the GMC Hummer EV. Moreover, both brands are displayed on the vehicle this time. In fact, a teaser photo of the car reveals a Hummer logo on the front grille and a slightly smaller GMC logo underneath.

9 It Will Be Made In The U.S.

In the past, the Hummer was a large part of the American car culture. In fact, the Hummer was even well-loved by Hollywood’s A-listers. If you need proof, just check out Arnold Schwarzenegger’s enviable Hummer collection. Hummer fans will be glad to know that the Hummer will continue to be produced in the U.S.

According to GM’s press statement, the Hummer will be built at General Motors’ Detroit-Hamtramck assembly plant using parts. The carmaker has also said that parts for the Hummer have been sourced globally.

8 It’s Fully Electric

We once said that an electric Hummer might really happen - now, we can confirm it, considering GM’s chosen assembly plant for the vehicle. Back in January, GM made an announcement that its Detroit-Hamtramck assembly plant would only be producing all-electric models.

The carmaker even committed a hefty $2.2 billion to the plant to get its electric revolution started. It seems the GM Hummer EV will become the plant’s first project. Since it’s electric, GM says the vehicle will have “zero emissions.”

7 It Comes With Several Powertrain Options

Over the years, we’ve seen some seriously badass Hummer models on the road, and we’re pretty sure that the upcoming GM Hummer EV will not disappoint either. For starters, GM has been teasing the vehicle's powertrain that can crank out up to 1,000 horses and 11,500 pound-feet of torque. In a way, the new Hummer will become a symbol of electric excess.

It looks like the GM Hummer EV will also come with other powertrain options. According to Car and Driver, GM product boss Mark Reuss revealed that the vehicle may come with up to three electric motor options.

6 It Comes With Several Trims

If the Hummer EV is available with several powertrain options, it only makes sense that there would be several trim levels as well. In fact, according to Car and Driver, Reuss has also confirmed that the Hummer EV comes with a “basic package.” At the moment, that’s the only available information regarding the trims although GM will probably reveal more soon enough.

It’s possible that GM will adapt trim levels that we are already familiar with. If that’s the case, you can probably expect the 1,000-horsepower Hummer EV to carry the Denali trim name.

5 It Features An Open-Air Design

Among Hummer enthusiasts, there are those that still regard the first-generation, open-top Hummer as their favorite. It's likely that the Hummer EV’s new open-air design will be a hit. GM’s teaser features large roof panels that can be removed completely.

According to GM, you just need to remove the four roof panels and front T-bar to let the world in. This feature must come in handy for those looking to transport bulky cargo with the Hummer EV.

4 The Hummer Will Come In Both Pickup Truck And SUV

GM is technically launching two new Hummer models. With an unveiling of the pickup truck variant first, followed by the SUV later on.

In fact, GM refers to its pickup as an “all-electric super truck.” The push to get the truck out there first may be partly motivated by Tesla’s plans to release its very own Cybertruck by late 2021. GM plans to start production on the Hummer EV truck by fall 2021.

3 It Comes With Some Unique Features

GM also decided to celebrate the resurrection of the Hummer by giving the vehicle some completely new features. For instance, the carmaker teased that the Hummer EV would have a frunk - that is, a front trunk.

The automaker also noted that the vehicle will feature both Crab and Adrenaline modes. Unfortunately, there’s no other information available about these at the moment. In addition, GM also mentioned that the Hummer EV features an “infinity roof,” which probably just refers to its open-roof design.

2 Its Campaign Features LeBron James

When the Hummer EV finally makes its debut, it will do so in style with the help of NBA superstar LeBron James. The Los Angeles Laker has always been a Hummer fan so for him, the partnership is a “natural fit.”

“Everyone knows about my love for Hummer since high school and I’m proud to be a part of announcing the new EV model,” James continued in a press statement. “The truck may be quiet, but the performance numbers speak for themselves. James also appears in a 30-second TV spot that teases the Hummer EV and its “quiet revolution.”
