By now, Ferrari fans have got accustomed to excessive prices and insanely expensive branded accessories. Additionally, most auto enthusiasts are aware that some Ferrari automobiles are pricey due to the fact that they are either unique works of art or uncommon icons of bygone eras. Think of the superb Ferrari 335 Sport Scaglietti auctioned in 2016 for roughly $36 million, which was equipped with a 4.1-liter V12 engine. Or the silver blue Ferrari 250 GTO, which was auctioned for a staggering $70.2 million in 2018.

These vehicles represent highly prized collectibles, so most gearheads expect them to cost a fortune. But, what’s more surprising is that not only Ferrari vehicles sell at staggering prices, as some of the company's branded engines also sell for outrageous amounts.

RM Sotheby’s just auctioned a 6.0-liter V12 Ferrari Enzo engine for $450,000. The Tipo F140 Ferrari Enzo engine came with inlets, airbox, ancillaries, and engine loom, according to the auction’s website.

“If mounted for display, the engine could be used as a fantastic centerpiece in any collection,” says RM Sotheby’s. “An otherwise unobtainable piece of Ferrari history; a rare opportunity to acquire a new old stock replacement unit from one of the marque’s flagship models.”

In the advertisement, the writer describes the engine as “new old stock.” Naturally, this gives the buyer an additional assurance that the powertrain is in outstanding condition, considering that Ferrari mechanics haven’t installed it on a Ferrari vehicle. But this is far from the only feature that would persuade a Ferrari enthusiast to spend his hard-earned cash on an engine that costs more than a single-family home. In fact, what is truly remarkable about this engine is the power it produces. As such, it is worth noting that the Enzo engine generates 651 horsepower at 7,800rpm, which means that it can push the car to a top speed of 217 miles per hour, according to The Sun. Furthermore, an Enzo Ferrari, equipped with this engine, could speed up from 0 to 62 miles per hour in 3.1 seconds. And if that wasn’t enough, buyers can also enjoy the distinct sound of the Prancing Horse engine once they’ve installed it on the right vehicle.

“The Ferrari 6.0-liter V12 from its iconic Enzo supercar is considered by many to be one of the finest engines ever made,” says The Sun. “As we move to electric cars and engines like this are no longer made, the values are going through the roof.”

Just to put things into perspective, $450,000 could buy you a home considering that the national median home value has climbed to $428,700 as of the first quarter of 2022. This sum could also buy you some serious luxury big boys’ toys, like a 2023 GMC Hummer, which has an MSRP of $108,700 and a small condo. Or $450,000 could erase your entire student debt, helping you start fresh. But, let’s face it, Ferrari didn’t build the Tipo F140 Ferrari Enzo Engine for regular folks, but for high-performance vehicles aficionados. Basically, the Ferrari enthusiast who purchased this potent naturally-aspirated engine would likely utilize it as a replacement part or a collector's item, displaying it in a private collection. In fact, RM Sotheby’s mentions on the advertisement that “if mounted for display, the engine could be used as a fantastic centerpiece in any collection.” But the auction house also adds that this represents “a rare opportunity to acquire a new old stock replacement unit from one of the marque’s flagship models.”

This isn’t the first time that RM Sotheby’s auctioned unique engines. In the past, the most famous classic car auction house in the world presented a Ferrari V-12 Engine Table, which sold for $246,000, a Ferrari California Engine With Display Stand that was auctioned in Monaco for €12,000 EUR ($12,815), a Rolls-Royce B60 Mk 6A Engine, and several other powertrains. Currently, RM Sotheby’s is advertising on its website a Duesenberg Model J Display Engine, which generates a stagerring 265 horsepower.

“One of the greatest engines of the classic era, the Duesenberg Model J straight-eight incorporated dual overhead camshafts controlling four inclined valves per cylinder, timing chains, and an impressive crankshaft which turned on five main bearings,” says the RM Sotheby’s advertisement.

Needless to say that there is a strong aftermarket for luxury vehicle engines. As for Scuderia Ferrari performance car parts, there will always be a strong demand for these parts and especially for replacement engines, so RM Sotheby’s will continue to auction other unique pieces even in the future.
