The 2023 Corvette Z06 has blown away the minds of many car enthusiasts, who are still wondering how the American manufacturer has come up with the most powerful naturally aspirated V8 engine to ever come in a production car. The new Corvette Z06 DOHC has a new flat plane-crank 5.5-liter V8 engine that produces 670 HP and 460 lb-ft of peak torque at 8,400rpm.

Corvette executive chief engineer Tadge Juechter spoke about the car’s design and why the new Z06 is mid-engined not just to woo racecar fans. The new Z06 DOHC is a wide-body supercar that has the highest-horsepower naturally aspirated V8 engine which will benefit from the extra traction as all high horsepower cars generally do.

To take a scientific approach to this topic would be the best choice to clear doubts surrounding how Corvette achieved this feat. Engineers at Chevrolet have certainly done an outstanding job producing such high peak power without forced induction that also meets emission standards, but this has to do with the LT6’s split intake manifold and its internal runners for the engine pumping out 460 lb-ft of torque at 6,300rpm.

Updated October 2022: The Chevy C8 Corvette Z06 is a cleverly engineered sportscar that opens a whole new chapter for modern American muscle cars. We have updated this article with more facts about the revolutionary V8 engine of the 2023 Corvette Z06 that will leave you mesmerized.

The LT6’s Split Intake Manifold works with Helmholtz resonance which increases the pressure inside the manifold. For the non-science people, Helmholtz resonance basically describes when external force pushing the air inside a cavity is removed, the higher-pressure air inside will flow out. This process repeats, with the magnitude of the pressure oscillations increasing and decreasing asymptomatically.

In the LT6 split manifold, the three valves can open and close at different RPMs which helps optimize airflow at different ranges to make more power. Two of these valves open around 2,000rpm while the third one stays closed till 5800rpm which effectively allows it to reach its peak torque at 6400rpm while offering much of the twist at lower revs giving the LT6 V8 multiple torque peaks.

Optimizing engine airflow at low revs is an old concept in the automotive industry, but engineers over at Chevrolet have taken it to the extreme with the Z06 DOHC’s V8. Calling the new LT6 engine groundbreaking will be an understatement.

Offering it as Naturally-Aspirated is a bold move for Chevrolet and is appreciated by fans of the specific sound that naturally-aspirated engines produce and which cannot be copied by turbos or hybrids. There are a few videos around the sound of this engine, and it's going to give you goosebumps without trying!

While General Motors does claim that the new LT6 engine is a completely new design and has nothing taken from its predecessors except the 4.4-inch Bore Center is common to all small-block V8s used by Chevy. It was even present in the C4 ZR1’s LT5.

To ensure its credibility, for the first in General Motors’ history, every LT6 engine will be tested on a Dyno, run through a 20-minute break-in, and then tested to make sure that stands up to the standards advertised. The new LT6 engine has an intake manifold comparable to the Ferrari 458 and engineers at Chevrolet had to beat the 458 which is still considered a benchmark for small-block V8s.

It’s daring for Chevrolet to ditch the new trend of electrification and increasing efficiency to going as big as they can on a flat-plane V8. The cylinder dimensions are 104.25 millimeters by 80 millimeters, which gets it a displacement of 5.5-liters. 5.5-liters is huge for a flat-plane V8 especially considering that its competitors like the Shelby GT350’s Voodoo V8 went up to 5.2-liters and Ferrari never went above 4.5-liters with its V8 engines.

The Corvette Z06’s main focus is its most powerful naturally aspirated V8 engine, however, Chevy made sure that no one could label its interior as boring. While most elements are similar to what's found in most Chevy cars. The cabin layout takes care of the driver, and Chevrolet has included an extensive list of standard and optional features. The new Z06 has a digital gauge cluster, a heads-up display, ventilated and heated seats, and wireless charging.

Being a track-focused car, the interior shows its track worthiness with microsuede accents and aggressively bolstered seats and two carbon-fiber intensive interior packages. The Z06 comes with two Bose-speaker setups, which you can select according to your preference. A 10-speaker setup and an optional 14-speaker setup accompany the 8-inch touchscreen setup. The Z06 also comes with Chevrolet’s Performance Data Recorder, which can be used to record videos of you racing down the tracks.
