Toyota has received more than a few complaints about the GR Supra over the years. Some didn't like its BMW-inspired bits, and others protested about the somewhat odd design of the doors and seats. The lack of manual transmission was also at the table.

Funny enough, Toyota fixed this last omission for 2023, but many people were still not satisfied, seeing the GR Supra as an outdated ride. Why would this famous Japanese brand insist on traditional engineering and design while most other manufacturers try to move forward with EVs and advanced technology?

All these complaints and questions brought a bit of negative publicity to the Toyota GR Supra. This sports car ended up being slightly overlooked in the gearheads' buying lists and passionate discussions.

Yet, we believe the Toyota GR Supra deserves more respect and attention for various reasons. Here are the most significant ones.

The Toyota GR Supra has a long and rich history behind it. This sports car and grand tourer arrived at the market way back in 1978 and lived to see five generations. The public was amazed by it from the start, but gearheads particularly enjoyed seeing GAZOO Racing taking the matter into its own hands in 2019.

Toyota's motorsport and performance division performed more than a couple of tweaks on the new Supra, making it part of the Gazoo Racing (GR) family. BMW also entered the picture to provide a platform and some other parts of the Z4 (such as the engines). But the biggest and most noticeable tweak was the actual presence of the Gazoo Racing spirit. With a performance-oriented design, an elegant silhouette, and a refined mix of smooth and rounded lines, the Toyota GR Supra has become a highly-desirable sports ride.

Surely, the Toyota GR Supra is not without its flaws, but we think the good things should be given more credit over the bad ones, starting with the admirable legacy and the exterior design. The fifth generation of this ride perfected the initial design, and it has only become better since 2019. The 2023 Toyota GR Supra is a beautiful sports car with enhanced aerodynamics, attractive 19- or 18-inch aluminum wheels, dynamic rear LED taillights, and LED signature headlights. The impressive performance comes as a cherry on top of this design. RELATED: There Is No JDM Car Going To Beat The 2022 Toyota GR Supra And Here’s Why

When it comes to the specs, the Toyota GR Supra always offered stable performance worthy of praise. At launch, there was a straight-six engine with 335 horsepower and 365 lb-ft of torque available. Then, a turbocharged four-cylinder one was added, delivering 255 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. Gazoo Racing also enhanced the straight-six further on to produce 382 horsepower and 367 lb-ft of torque, which is the range that the Toyota GR Supra still offers today, respectively.

Generally speaking, one has to admire the fact that the Toyota GR Supra is born out of a passion for driving. That's obvious in several ways, but maybe most in the introduction of the 6-speed manual transmission. The new Supra speaks to both avid fans of traditional-alike driving and modern drivers who seek high-tech and personalization, so there's something for everybody.

We should also mention the cat-back exhausts tuned to the Toyota GR Supra's performance, an adaptive variable suspension for a more comfortable driving experience, and Brembo brakes designed for more stability and control. There's also an electronically controlled rear differential and a specially designed undercover for enhanced aerodynamics. All these features make the Toyota GR Supra a mighty performer worthy of every gearhead's attention.

One of the first complaints you may hear about the Toyota GR Supra is that the cabin is a little tight. That's true, as well as the fact that it's challenging to get in and out of the car in a breeze. However, it would be unjust to say that the interior of the Toyota GR Supra lacks anything else. That is, this sports car is otherwise all sleek and convenient inside.

First, the Toyota GR Supra is performance-focused inside, blending form, function, and beauty in one simple and attractive cabin. The bolstered sports seats are there to ensure comfort and grip, the leather-wrapped telescopic steering wheel provides quick response and enhanced control, and an 8-inch digital display shows all performance specs and entertainment options. Of course, there's also a heads-up display to keep the eyes of the driver close to the road.

In terms of additional tech, this sports vehicle comes with the Supra Connect system that provides Automatic Emergency Calls, Real-Time Traffic Information, Roadside Assistance, and much more. You can also connect to Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, use wireless charging, and take advantage of Toyota's advanced safety and driver-assistance features.
