DeLorean continues to make headlines with its recently previewed EV: The Alpha5. DeLorean's Alpha5 will officially premiere on August 18th at the prestigious Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, then on August 21st at Concept Lawn. But at the time of this writing, we’re still awaiting confirmation. Keep in mind that, despite the similarities, the DeLorean Motor Company behind the all-electric Alpha 5 is not the same company that introduced the iconic DMC DeLorean back in the early ‘80s.

Now renamed DeLorean Motors Reimagined LLC after years of working as a steelmaker in Texas, DeLorean finally took a leap into the rising electric segment.

DeLorean's new electric vehicle strikes a delicate balance between past and future and continues to showcase its iconic DNA. This Grand Tourer has two doors and four seats with an electric heart. And unlike the slow DMC-12, this low-end car can accelerate from 0 to 60mph in just about 3 seconds and has a top speed of 250mph.

DeLorean, the brand known for its iconic DMC-12 made famous in the "Back to the Future" movies. The name is making a comeback with a pristine electric concept car. Here are our favorite features of DeLorean’s new electric Alpha5.

The New Electric DeLorean Boasts A Unique, Aggressive Character That Is Largely Familiar

The new DeLorean presents itself with an elegant and futuristic design approach, with slightly increased dimensions compared to the ‘70s DMC-12. Alpha5 was designed by the Italdesign team founded by Giorgio Giugiaro, who also shaped the DMC-12. Its design features gull-wing doors, inspired by the original. The Alpha5 also has vented rear window covers, horizontal LED strips for the taillights, unique shoulder lines that wrap around the car, and an aerodynamic blade rim wheel design, all of which nod to the DMC-12.

Plus, the design has also changed significantly from the thin layout that DMC-12 showed during its time. In design, the Alpha5 takes on a curvier outline, far opposite to the DMC-12’s styling, which was more squared-off and boxy. Alpha5 is the first of several interesting products DeLorean is preparing for the near future. And it won’t be the last. At a glance, it looks like something you’ll be spotting on American roads very soon. Except, you won’t. This is because, according to Joost de Vries, one of the lead folks behind the Alpha5’s development and former Tesla vice president of global service, the Alpha5 EV won’t have typical hypercar speed, and nor will it be a street-legal EV.

Certainly, the concept car is the long-awaited culmination of more than 40 years of working with the leading design firm Italdesign. To seem even more futuristic, the Alpha5 is equipped with a lot of LED lights. The vehicle has LED strips on the inside of the gull wings, which flash to let you know when the wings are up. The front and rear ends also feature thin LED strips and a unique V-shaped LED at the bottom of the bumper. At the rear, the EV vaunts a retractable rear spoiler and a chunky rear diffuser.

The Alpha5’s spacious cabin features sporty captain seats that will occupy its driver and passengers comfortably. The electric vehicle’s interior is not connected to the classic DMC-12. For the Alpha5’s cabin, DeLorean took a more futuristic and sportier layout, with its beautiful dashboard at the center, which houses a floating digital instrument cluster. It has a second screen that’s part of the center console. This screen proves a point of interaction for the infotainment system and other vehicle controls. Below the screen are several USB ports, a wireless charging system, as well as buttons and dials for climate adjustments.
