If you have been salivating over the Suzuki Jimny and are frustrated that the adorable little back-to-basics SUV will never be traversing Route 66 or the Rubicon Trail, here is some more news to further foul up your already melancholy mood. In Japan, you will be able to transform your Jimny into a miniature retro/modern Ford Bronco or a Mercedes G Wagon clone with the help of a company that supplies aftermarket kits to those who may not be content with simply driving an uber-cool off-roader.

To refresh your memory, the Suzuki Jimny is a small, boxy and body-on-frame SUV powered by a 1.5L 4-cylinder engine equipped with a part-time 4WD system and standard 5-speed manual transmission. Very much in the mold of the original Suzuki Samurai, the tiny trucklet has been an unabashed hit for Suzuki and a very sore point for its American fans due to Suzuki’s inability or lack of desire to help it conform to US regulations.

The Japanese company, Dream Automotive Design and Development (DAMD), has come up with a body kit to turn the Jimny into something even more special. The kit, replete with white-painted bumpers and steel wheels, evokes visions of the original Ford Bronco. And DAMD if they stopped there. They have built or are in the process of building kits to transform the little boxy SUV into any number of automotive icon lookalikes such as the Mercedes G Wagon or the Land Rover Defender .

We are not sure if driving a cloned SUV is your thing (or ours), but a kitschy-little off-roader that looks like it could be something costing much more, and is uniquely capable and alluring in its own right kind of tugs at our heartstrings. The Jimny, along with all of its lookalike kits just bring a smile to our faces, and make us dream of what could have been.
