When it comes to the world of EVs, the South Koreans are very much the kings right now. Kia and Hyundai have over the last couple of years developed some truly incredible EVs. The EV6 is a Kia product that offers a sleek, shooting-brake style machine and is of course built on sister company Hyundai’s E-GMP platform. Then Hyundai of course brought us the Ioniq 5, one of the greatest EVs of recent times with incredible styling, the E-GMP platform and amazing performance, efficiency and so much more.

Hyundai is now busy preparing for the next chapter in its EV history. Not too long ago, the company unveiled the Ioniq 6, the next chapter in its EV story. The Ioniq 6 offers something quite different to the Ioniq 5 that came before it. Instead of a boxy, retro-style shape, we get the sleek, swooping streamliner with a little bit of Porsche at the rear and a car that has the lowest drag coefficient in the history of Hyundai. We have a little bit of time still before the Ioniq 6 is out, but we think it will be very much worth the wait.

One Of The Most Stunning Looking EVs Yet Made

When the Ioniq 6 was first unveiled, the first thing everyone’s attention was quickly drawn to was the styling of it. The Ioniq 5 was a boxy, 1980s style design but the Ioniq 6 offers a sleek streamlined style, and it is one that is hugely efficient aerodynamically. The Ioniq 6 features the lowest drag coefficient of any Hyundai in the company's history, at just 0.21, an absolutely mind-blowing number. Hyundai was able to achieve this with the assistance of the car's low nose, its active air flaps in the front, the wheel gap reducers and optional slim digital side mirrors.

The Ioniq 6 is a very graceful machine, starting with that low front and nose, before it arches over the top of the car and gracefully curves and drops down to the rear. It is perhaps the sleekest shape in the EV world right now, and the rear of the car has a little bit of Porsche Taycan to it as well. The side silhouette provides one of the best viewing angles of the car, to highlight just how well proportioned the Ioniq 6 and how smooth and elegant the actual side of the EV is.

Building Upon The Brilliant E-GMP Platform

Like the Ioniq 5, the Ioniq 6 uses the E-GMP platform that has proven so successful, renowned for its driveability and efficiency. The platform was specifically developed for Hyundai’s range of EVs, and it shows, with the 800V ultra-fast charging capability of the platform allowing the car to charge from 10 to 80% in just 18 minutes while also supporting 400V charging without the need for an additional component or adapter. Perhaps the best feature for the platform is the range it gives the Ioniq 6.

A lot of people have worries about range anxiety, but that should not be an issue with the Ioniq 6. Hyundai has said that the Ioniq 6 has a staggering 614 km of range, or 381 miles, so nearly 400 miles of real-world range. With an energy consumption rate of around 13.9 kWh per 100 km, this makes the Ioniq 6 one of the most efficient EVs in the world at present. So combine the recipe of the E-GMP platform, with the unique styling and ultra-low drag coefficient, and you have the ingredients for another Tesla beating car at no doubt a fraction of the price too.

Ensuring That The Interior Matches The Exterior

Like with the Ioniq 5, the interior is very much as good as the exterior. Hyundai says it is a cocoon-inspired interior, with plenty of legroom front and rear and a 12-inch touch infotainment system and 12-inch digital instrument cluster. The vast legroom is another standout feature of the E-GMP platform, allowing the electric architecture to be cleverly packaged without compromising the interior and allowing for a flat floor inside the car. Add in the dual color ambient lightning and the big windows, and you have an airy, spacious and comfortable cabin for all.

There is no doubt in our minds that the Ioniq 6 will be 100% worth the wait. Hyundai has created another truly stunning design, that not only looks fantastic but also allows the car to be one of the most efficient EVs on the planet. The Ioniq 6 really is not all for show. The interior matches the exterior, and it is another car that shows just how right they and Kia have got things at the moment, Hyundai in particular leading the way. We simply can’t wait to finally get our hands on this stunning machine.
