When it comes to modifying your car to make it truly your own, there are many roads to go down with the direction of your build. It can be a stripped down racecar, an over the top stance build, a crazy Donk, or even just be altered with subtle touches. But, every single one of them requires choosing a set of wheels to match the overall design and theme of your car.

This has been the case for as long as cars have been modified by their owners, with aftermarket wheel makers popping up and offering all kinds of unique styles and types of wheel. Choosing from the seemingly endless sea of choices can be tough, but understanding your car and its design elements can make that job easier.

When it comes to sports cars, many wheels fall directly into the "cool on paper, but not in reality" category. Read on, to see 15 such wheels that seem cool, but really should be kept far away from any sports car:

15 Ronal Urs

Via Miata.net

Have you ever looked at your car and thought "wow, this sure would look better with teddy bear wheels!" I'll assume the answer is no if you're sane. However, that didn't stop wheel maker Ronal from designing and making such wheels, the results look as strange as you'd imagine, and do an excellent job of destroying any notion of sportiness.

14 Intra Koala

Via Fast Car Magazine

Interestingly enough, these aren't the first wheels to use this Koala design. While its strange, and very questionable, they apparently pay homage to an optional extra from the Mazda 121. Why anyone would want these on their sports car remains unknown, what is known is that they're ugly as hell.

13 Status Grinder

Via CarBuzz

For those who remember the car enthusiast trends of the early 2000s, these may invoke some nostalgia. Reminiscent of the days when Need For Speed and The Fast & The Furious defined automotive taste, these wheels haven't aged well. Simply put, they're gaudy as hell, looking more like a vegetable peeler than anything sporty.

12 Dub Flash Floater

Via Pinterest

The trend of flashy "dub" (oversized) wheels has its place in the automotive community, just not on sports cars. Typically, these wheels are for Donks, which combine flashy paint jobs and giant wheels on '80s American sedans. Giving that treatment to anything sporty just makes no sense, as all handling, speed, and ride quality deteriorates instantly, plus it clashes with the already attention grabbing design of sports cars.

11 Forgiato Fiore

Via SoCal Custom Wheels

Forgiato wheels are respectable, but can get a bit too wild. Intended to be luxury wheels, their designs range from gorgeous and classy, to whatever nonsense they were dreaming of with these ugly discs. At the very least, these Fiores were color matched to the car, but that's not saying much, as they look thoroughly tacky and un-sporty. Prepare yourself, as these are far from the worst of what luxury wheel brands offer...

10 Forgiato Radurra

Via Reddit

Have you ever tried changing your wheels and thought: "hey, the brake assembly looks better than an actual wheel!" Well, if so these are the wheels for you. Made from a transparent disc, the Forgiato Radurra has no bad design elements... because nothing was actually designed here. Its about as strange as a wheel can get, and one can only imagine how it'll look after brake dust builds up along the window.

As mentioned, the Donk treatment tends to be rather terrible when done to sports cars. However, if you really want to take things to a new extreme of gaudy, the Forgiato Magra has you covered. Looking like the byproduct of a candy factory, they're as flashy as a wheel can get, and may just hypnotize you into thinking they look good.

8 Forgiato Parlaro

Via Motorward

Words fail to describe just how weird these wheels are. Another home-run in gaudy design by Forgiato, the Parlaro is just downright strange, with enough gaudiness to put it squarely into the "disgusting" category. The only redeeming feature here is that they're different, and kind of look like a pizza cutter, but that's it. Keep these away from your sports car, and any other vehicle you may own for that matter.

7 Dayton Wire Wheels

Via ClubLexus

Wire wheels are awesome, conveying a vintage elegance that is hard to come by today. Wheel maker Dayton happens to keep that elegance alive, producing modern replicas of vintage wire wheels, and they look fantastic... on vintage cars. Why in the world someone would put them on a modern sports car is beyond me, but one thing I do know, they don't work together at all.

6 Rucci Ize

Via Rucci Wheels

Another luxury wheel brand, Rucci makes some pretty cool stuff, if put on a proper Donk or muscle car. Put them on a curvy sports car, and they just look wrong. This design in particular just doesn't work here, destroying the lightweight construction and sleek style that looks great on so many sports cars.

5 Rucci Chain

Via FormaCar

Another home run from Rucci, these wheels take a two pronged assault when it comes to ruining the sportiness of this Corvette. To begin with, the brake rotor looks absolutely puny compared to the massive wheel. While the overall design is fine for a sports car, the chain engraving is confusing, and just too flashy.

Via Asantiwheels.com

Yet another luxury wheel brand, Asanti, like Forgiato, has some great designs that match sports cars well, but this just isn't one of them. I'd hesitate to say these would look good on anything, as the design is confusing, and just too "unique" to work in harmony with any production sports cars.

3 Forgiato Andata

Via Pinterest

I'll admit it, I like the look of these wheels on bigger luxury cars like a Rolls Royce or BMW 7 Series, as they work in harmony with the larger than life proportions and overall design. Put them on a sleek sports car like this Aston Martin, and that stops holding true. They're rather in-your-face, something that balances out with a luxury sedan, but not an already loud and attention grabbing sports car.

2 Hipnotic C-Note

Via Drive2.com

Indeed, these wheels are hypnotic, but in a "can't look away from a train wreck" kind of way. I'm not quite sure these wheels would look good on any car, as the design is just so busy and abstract that they take all the attention away from the car, and onto themselves. At least this Audi TT color coordinated them, but that's about the limit of positive points I can think of here.

1 Messer Turbofan

Via Autoevolution

As a huge fan of vintage Le Mans racers, I absolutely love the look of Turbofan wheels, on a proper Le Mans racer. While some sports cars look great with them, its a hard look to pull off. These ones especially, are just way too over the top for a subtle car like this Audi R8, and break from the brutal functionality focused design that made Turbofans popular. The color doesn't help their case either.
