In what appears to be a mashup of a classic Cadillac and a modern electric motorcycle, newcomer Zaiser Motors has released renderings of a cruiser they are eloquently calling the Electrocycle. With aesthetics that may be best described as distinct, designers at Zaiser have introduced an EV bike that will offer some unique tech to complement its unique looks. While this startup is still pursuing funding (see their Wefunder page for details), they clearly wanted to make a splash by releasing mockups that make a Honda Rune seem dull. There is still much work to be done before a rolling example hits the road, but company representatives claim pre-ordering will start later this year or early next.

The Electrocycle Rethinks The Conventional Motorcycle

The motorcycle industry has been reinvigorated by the arrival of electric motorcycles. Smaller manufacturers, such as Zero and Damon, saw a gap in the market and have made significant inroads with EV consumers. Without a hundred years of history dictating their signature style, these new players have sought innovative ways to reconfigure a motorcycle. Some of these approaches have been more extreme than others and Zaiser definitely falls on the radical end of the spectrum.

While most bike builders apply power to just the rear wheel, Zaiser plans on placing a motor in the hub of each wheel in order to achieve two-wheel drive. Others (like Rokon and Ural) have accomplished 2WD, but it still remains a novel idea in motorcycling and to do so with hub motors shows how Zaiser is thinking outside the box (or frame in this case).

And the ambitious engineers will also have their work cut out for them, as the company is promising some rather lofty goals when it comes to range (300 miles), top speed (120 mph), and 0 to 60 mph (in under four seconds). The one number that seems most optimistic is the range. With current battery technology and the limited space to store those batteries on a bike, a range of 300 miles seems a stretch. They are planning to make the batteries exchangeable so the rider can charge them in their home (a major benefit for those living in apartments and condos in an urban setting) and perhaps this will allow owners to upgrade them when the tech in battery packs advances.

The Electrocycle Asks If An EV Bike Can Be A Retro Rig?

The introduction of the Electrocycle emphasized safety (via features like traction control and auto stabilization) and sustainability (through a selective use of materials), but the elephant in the room is clearly the styling of this machine. EV bikes are the future of motorcycling, so to see a machine that alludes to automotive designs of the past is pretty jarring. By presenting art deco fins and curves, the Electrocycle pays homage to a past it was never a part of. The folks at Zaiser are hoping these unusual styling decisions attract prospect buyers and investors. And while they still have a long way to go, if there is a future in which the Electrocycle is a viable EV option, riders may give this unconventional cruiser a chance.
